Valve's not keeping all the profits; it's cutting out 25 percent and giving it directly to the creators.

So, should you be fortunate enough to get an item on the store, not only do you get to play around with items you created, but you get to directly profit from your passion for Valve's products. How much can be made? Well Valve just flew players out to its studio in Bellevue, Wash. and handed over checks. Steven Skidmore and Spencer Kern, amongst others, were given royalty checks for sums ranging from $39,000 to $47,000, and that's just for two weeks.

I have the sudden urge to get into 3D Modelling.

AND THAT'S JUST 25% OF IT.

Mixed feelings on this news.

On one hand, I bought the Polycount pack specifically to support the modelers since I know full well how thankless that sort of work can be (especially UV mapping), so I'm really pleased that they're being compensated. And wow, are they ever! There are inhouse modelers at a lot of game studios who don't get that much as their yearly salary.

On the other hand, now there's going to be a freaking flood of absolute junk pouring into the contribution site, meaning the quality stuff is going to get buried.

Related, Valve will reject the crappy models that really don't belong in TF2.

Unrelated, stop signing your posts.

Making purely cosmetic item and get it official = 40 000$

Make a map and get it official = What, maybe 1000$?

It is not fair

Make hats, Get paid, Fuck bitches

Also why are people suddenly going "omg map making is worthless now"

You people were really in it just for for the money? If anything getting your map official should be a plus, not the goal.

This.

But I can see where you're coming from if you already have something official. I'd be pretty butthurt if I got $3000 for a map (that I'd spent months on), and then some bloke came with a model (a few hours to a weeks work) and got >$40,000. I would.

I'm OK with this.

It just makes sense if you think about it. Effort was never really a measure of anything anyways. It's all about how it's used.

I'm still just glad I have "Team Fortress 2" on my resume. Way more important than the few grand.

Not saying I am in mapping just for the money... ...it is about the amount of work.
And I am not going to get any of my maps official any time soon, so money is not a goal for me.

Maybe Valve should make possible to put maps to contribute system. Then you could get the maps from random drops or if you want you could buy them! LET US SEND THIS IDEA TO VALVE
...joking...
