Arena Draft

ARENA Draft
From Matt "Lord Ned" Hoffman and Ben "Nerdboy" Waters comes:

So there you have it. Leave a post if you're running it on your server or enjoy it. :)

Extra Thanks:
Thanks to A Boojum Snark and Seba for help with server-list thumbs.
Thanks to Snacks for uncomplicateing some displacements, and being an all-around great help.

And really thanks to Nerdboy. Even though it's half his map, this guy has just been amazing to work with. I'd close the map in frustration over something and go to bed, and I'd wake up in the morning and Nerdboy would have fixed or detailed or taken care of whatever it was, without me even mentioning it.

The dream began one quiet August night as Lord Ned prepared to resurrect Hydroelectric. The very same night, Nerdboy, master of time and space, challenged him. "Lord Ned, good sir," he commented amidst the glow of the Livestream client, "I do believe it is preposterous for such an arena map to feature a sight line straight across both spawns." Insulted, Lord Ned challenged him to produce a layout that would be better than Hydroelectric's. And so, Nerdboy was off to produce such a layout in under 80 days. He took two hours. The rest is history.

Produced over the course of a months and eight iterations comes Draft, a new and exciting arena map from the creators of Hydroelectric and Drybed! A mega-fusion of height and options make this map more addicting than Gorge.

Full Change log available here!

Very Lumberyard-esque. Very sexy.

I'm not digging those clouds in the skybox, looks too stretched and close. That metal ceiling texture in ss_5 looks weird the way it intersects.
Also that Binks Logging building looks unnatural and awkward. Other than that it looks fantastic.

Layout wise I don't see anything in the screen shots.

I look forward to playing this, looks really fun.

Lol at "enjoy Draft responsibly."

Looks good. Not a huge Arena fan, and I feel like the theme (see Yukon) is grossly overused... but that said, it is well done. Congratulations on reaching beta 1, and may it one day graduate to an incredibly streamlined Release Candidate.

I assume just the ones on blue's side in the back corner? (The clouds)

Also not sure what to do about the metal ceiling. Tried to nab Lumberyard's style, but lumberyard never had a 45* building. :p

Also blame Nerdboy for the Bink's building.

This grayish wood texture on most of the buildings' exterior makes it all look really plain (nullifies all the quality geometry there)

Don't wanna sound impolite, but just feel like it's not making half the impression-impact it's capable of.

Looking nice...but, if I can ask, what are those rock models (or whatever) at cp. And all around...

The buildings look a bit bare imo, add some more props or overlays. D:

I like how the map immediately thrusts you into action when you step out, either going left or right from the spawn. In other maps, the teams end up resorting to camping at one end or the other but in this map, there isn't many places for teams to camp, so teams have to be mobile in this map - which, I feel is perfectly acceptable for arena.

Also, yeah, I'd agree with more overlays. Always good to have them.

Good sized for arena map. Looks good. What else?

There weren't any bad sight lines... well maybe that place when you go that "upper" route and you can shoot over the fence.

Can you elaborate on this, or is it just the ability to jump onto the fence top and shoot from there?

The map was fun, i mean seriously, it was really fun, no doubt one of better arena maps out there.

My only problems were first blood crits (Tough i do belive server can turn them off) some really odd looking displacments here and there, and then some really boring looking walls on some buildings.
