I have a KOTH map with some battlements and i do not want a sentry to reach the cp. Anyone know how far they fire?

They fire within a radius of 1024 units. Do keep in mind though that the Wrangler does allow them to use the gun beyond that effective range manually.

Thanks! i know wranglar will allow them to hit the cp, but thats if they equip it; and anyone with it can shoot any distance :)

Sentries can fire for ever until they hit something, however the auto-aim and auto-fire will only recognise foes up to 1024 units. If they fire at someone within that range and it misses, the bullet/rocket will keep moving until it hits something.

I believe the range has been reduced by a few units, but that level 3 sentries have slightly longer range as well.

Best way I've found to keep sentry ranges in mind while mapping is to make a prop_static (I use the wrangler shield since the eng update, but a sentry or anything you want will work). Set the fade start distance to 1024 and the fade end distance to 1024. Place this in a visgroup called "reference" or "scaleReference" or whatever. Make sure helpers are turned on.

Then when you want to check sentry placement, just move this prop to where the sentry will be and the yellow globe for the fade distance will give you a fairly accurate view of its range.

Before you compile, uncheck the "reference" visgroup on the sidebar.

I believe the automated sentry range was raised to 1120 instead of 1024; someone in chat checked this some time ago, but I don't know how accurate they were.

Unless there was a recent change, there's no range difference between Level 1 and Level 3. I remember testing with teleporting target-bots to specific positions.

True, but it's a good habit. I also put lots of other stuff in the reference visgroup, like measuring brushes, colour reference, architecture tests, etc which wouldn't get deleted by the compile process.

They're removed at the expense of TF2 bitching that "model/player/sentry_gun" or whatever is "a dynamic model and will be omitted" every time you load the map.
