Since we don't get a public vote i thought it would be nice to discuss some of our favourite entries; where they look nice and where they could be improved.

My personal tastes lean towards Petazzo and Honeymustard, which may or may not come as a surprise considering they chose the same/similar theme as myself.

Either way both of these entries have executed the TF2 architecture to what i consider to be more accurate than most; and the light ambience is sufficiently complimentary to the respective themes.

Honeymustard's weak point seems to be his attention to the out of bounds/3dskybox area, lacking a sufficient fog distance to disguise his map edges and doesn't seem to have considered what to put here due to the lack of prop diversity. His C is sufficiently detailed if not overloaded with crates. A note on the concept of progression, the map disappointingly lacks any spytech.

Petazzo on the other hand has included spytech for his final capture point but in contrast to the rest of his map his detail has waned, possibly a result of running out of time before the deadline. His A and B presented a promising submission.

Whilst they may not be crammed full of detail I like these because they were well executed, they present a nice mood and accurately replicate the TF2 art/architectueral style.

Can I speak for just about everyone and say Ym and Rexy?

I loved all the space entries, and I can't wait to get hold of all the custom packs that people have made. I think those that have made new themes and finished their map deserve extra credit.

I'm not sure what to think, I suppose I could think like you and pick some who really suited in the TF2 universe. On the other hand, I still prefer being original over just doing what valve have done lots of times before.

There's no denying YM's entry is gorgeous in every single way, and I want it to be in just because of those tree models. However I'm a bit afraid it wont work to well gameplay-wise, the messy textures and all the props might make it a bit confusing. Still the most beautiful and original entry in my opinion.

Acegikmo's entry is very original as well, but it's a bit uneven and some areas feel like they need a bit more work. The custom content is top notch, though, and I really love the setting of the map.

Fubar's entry might actually be my favourite, not too far from the existing TF2 architecture, but still adding the beautiful cave area which stunned me immediately.

Gooba's entry is the one I've been anticipating the most, but there still is no download, so I havent been able to try it out.

Andf where's whark!?!??!?!?!

Dr.Spud

Spud had really good and strong theme that he used well. Map end up looking really good and made me wish that i would live in there. Point C had pretty cool (and funny, i have to say) idea, that was well made. Spytech parts are top notch and optimization is good. I see no reason why this wouldn't win whole contest.

YM

I say right away that this is my favorite entry in entire contest. When i first saw it, it look pretty boring and felt like it had unfitting theme for TF2. My god i was wrong, in the end YM had really solid good looking entry with unique theme. All 3 points were interesting and well made, also, i love whole Redmont Mann thing as a detail and as part of map storyline. This is artpass that will be example to others.

Grazr

No doubt best use of farm theme in artpass contest and it looks glorious. The dawn is really good effect that bring some life to map, and non-gameplay area detail is best one in this contest. One of the two entries that made me wish i live in TF2 world, really well made, last point is unique and there is no way you can forget that pumpkin once you seen it.
Also..... I <3 Haybales :wow:

artpass_re1wind_60008.jpg

re1wind

This map brings some new life to good old mining theme. It has some interesting architecture and some really cool control points. Bit like YM entry, at start it looked like something that is not going to end up on my favorites, now it is one of my favorites. Even tough some spots have some overkill with lightning, map really looks damn good. If re1wind doesn't win this he still should make new map using this theme, i like it, i like it a lot.

This map is good, it has amazing 3d skybox that really brings some life to map.
Spytech is not good as it could be but last point saves it. Some parts of the map were really clever, i liked how shed from orginal valve's artpass turn into silo and some stairwells pile of grain or sand.
In the end, all i have left to say is... Magny, you have done it again.

3Dnj's entry is looking great, probably my favorite.
Mangy did an amazing job creating different geometry while keeping the same pathing. It's the most creative entry in my book.
YM's entry is also great, many nice custom models and such. I personally think some detail is lacking in places, and some lightsources seem a bit too strong. But overall a very pretty entry!

Good luck for everyone who entered :)

Well it has to be YM doesn't it.

Thanks Grazr :D

edit: had a run through Ace Gikmo's in game though and it does look just as incredible as YM's, so either one would be lovely. Certainly if Ace wins, I would hope Valve would commission YM to make a new map using the same assets as his art pass map.

I had a look through the screenshots in the upload thread and there were 25+mine that I considered to be of good quality. I'm really impressed that there are so few shockingly bad entries and a far higher proportion of great entries than all tf2m's previous contests.

As for favourites, I couldn't pick since I've only seen mine and acegikmo's in game and have only seen a handful of wip screenshots of the others.

I submitted, on time, to the contest section of TF2Maps but just didn't notice the "official thread". Am I disqualified based on that? (Please no...)

You would have to ask ZPQ, but yes, you have to read the rules, and post in the thread, not in the section.

I just looked through all your started threads, I can't see one that is in the contest entries section.

If you didn't post there, and you didn't post in the upload thread.. where did you post?

Oh, well I guess you're probably out of luck since the rules clearly state:
have a thread in the Contest Entries forum.

And
once the submission thread is up and the deadline set you will have until that deadline to the second with no exceptions.

You have god to be kidding me.

Would it hurt the community so much for this entry - which was in on time - to be included? I busted my ass for 3 months on this, and you'll disqualify it not even for a technical glitch in the map itself - which I could understand - but for failing to post a thread.

Note also that the rule you reference wasn't stated in the Valve post at all. I didn't read the thread and violate its rule. I just didn't see the thread, and went by the "Details, Rules and Content" listed here and here.
