So I know everyone here (with good reason) disapproves of user-made edits of Valve's maps, especially straight gametype edits like cp_2fort and other such monstrosities.
However, what do you think when Valve themselves re-release versions of their map with different gametypes? Do those fall into the same pitfalls that the user-made edits have, or does it instead provide a new way to experience the same environment?
And are there any existing maps you would like to see expanded/modified into a different gametype? (I'll say Lumberyard, personally)

I have always thought arena_badlands would make a cool ctf map. with the spawns and the like being changed a lot.

i see nothing wrong with them. the broken-ness can sometimes be fun, although i have yet to see one that has worked really well.

be_badwater seemed pretty popular.

Just saying.

most non-valve-valve-edits are of terrible quality, not saying that all of them are..there's some that are quite good at showing us a different side to a familiar map

what does be_ stand for?

And I'm aware most non-valve valve edits are poor in quality/conception, I was mostly wondering if Valve re-releasing the maps as a different gametype bothers people. For example, in ctf_sawmill, the lumber shack and waterfall areas are both made largely redundant due to ctf not revolving around that central building.

To answer my own question though, I always thought ctf_lumberyard could be cool- make the spawn buildings larger and turn them into each team's base.
Or ctf_nucleus: because the world needs a circular ctf map.

ctf_nightlands is a brilliant remake of cp_badlands, one of few valve map remakes I like. I think Valve failed quite hard when converting sawmill from arena to CTF, it had potential but they failed to use it fully. In fact my dream conversion is of sawmill to 5-cp, keeping the interesting dropdowns that are the good parts of ctf_sawmill.

I'm guessing they haven't made things such as cp_goldrush due to balance issues. They might as well make a new map than have several tests, modifications, tests, more modifications, re-optimise.

Honestly I'd rather they work on new maps than change a few entities and a couple of rooms to make a new gamemode of an old map. Arena and koth are barely played anyway, and they're the only gamemodes that really work as each other.

1. stealing other's hard work and signing it with your name - plagiarism
2. valve re-releasing their own maps, modyfying their own hard work
3. got an idea for a better map? - make it yourself

...because the world needs a circular ctf map.

thats why im making one (not all of it is circular, but it has quite a few circular rooms, 2 of which are the main rooms (not technically correct as one of them is a half circle.)

As for the actual topic: pl_turbo :D
