Any way to make custom sounds louder?

T

The Asylum

So I made me a custom sound, and put that in an ambient_generic. It plays fine and works like it's supposed to, but it's just so very very quiet. The sound file itself is quite loud, but in-game it's almost inaudiable, even when the volume is set to 10

I really would not like to resort to artificially bumping up the sound level and cause distortion, is there anything else I can do?

About the only thing you can do is double up the entities, which will stack it. You could also possibly see if turning it into a soundscape will give you better control.

That's exactly what I don't want to do.

Artificially raising sound level = shitifying quality.

Depends. If it's really as quiet as you say compared to the defaults, it probably peaks at well below 0dB (I don't know why they call the maximum "zero decibels", but they do). Running it through Normalize would be enough to boost it to the level you need, and unless you're some really picky audiophile who can tell a 256kbps MP3 file from the original CD, you won't notice any reduction in quality.

Because it's a logarithmic unit. 1 db is 10^0 (unit-less measurement). 10 db is 10^10. -10 db is 10^-10.

Anyway, if the sound isn't peaking at a volume to "clip"* then you're ok to raise the decibel level.

*That is, when the intended volume tries to be louder than the maximum volume allowed by the hardware. It's why guys screaming into their mics don't sound loud and just sound shitty.
