ok, so my friend Combine found an excellent tie fighter model, 2 problems, its too large (its about 2, 2 1/2 times as large as it should be.) and for some reason it turns out without any of the textures.

thats what it looks like....

any ideas on how to scale it/get the textures to work?

Draser, make sure it's installed right...if it's not your model then it looks like you may not have installed it right. The only way to scale it is to decompile/recompile--which I'm very strongly against doing since it's not your model. Ask permission first.

The scale should be set either in the modelling program or in the .qc, former recommended. As for the texture, it's either compiled or installed wrong. Most likely the latter.

What's wrong with just rescaling it? And even ignoring that it was apparently just ripped from another game, it's a TIE Fighter, so if the guy had made it himself that would fall under the category of derivative work, making him a hypocrite if he complained about anything derived from it (like a rescaled version).

So you're justifying one unethical action with another?

I'm saying it's not unethical in the first place to rescale a model, regardless of who made it. If the person were to take full credit for it, THAT would be unethical, but a simple "Model by X, rescaled by Y" is not unethical at all.

I find it unethical to rip apart anyone's work, regardless if you're just planning on rescaling it. Valve has expressed no issue using stock materials within other Source games or mods (that's how the mod community works). Using a model ripped from a non-Valve game to put into a Valve game, possibly copyrighted, that's unethical, and it's theft. And it's disrespectful. If you need a rescale, ask the author. If you can't do that, build your own.

If by "rip it apart" you mean decompile, that's kind of necessary to modify it, unless source has been provided, in which case it's already been "ripped apart." Here you might as well also question the ethicalness of any mod community where the developer has not explicitly stated that they want a mod community.

Why does it matter who made the game? You're messing with it regardless, so what's so unethical about content coming from something else?

it's theft
 What exactly is being stolen?

And it's disrespectful.
It's more disrespectful of the artist to inhibit derivative works.

That's just ridiculous. In sticking with this thread as an example, there is a TIE Fighter model that is just twice as big as it needs to be. So, the end goal is a TIE Fighter half this size. It's ridiculous to make another one from scratch when you could just scale down the extant one. This is so simple I'd call it axiomatic.

As long as due credit is given, there's nothing wrong with modifying any existing content.

I can't argue the fact more than what's taking place is theft. You can strip apart my argument in any fashion you want, it doesn't change the fact that in the end, you're defending the action of theft of someone's work.

If you don't have the express permission of the author to modify this model, then you don't have the right to. To do so anyway is unspeakably rude. If this model belongs to say, a LucasArts game, and you're stealing it to use in your map project, you are now subject to legal action from LucasArts for the theft of copyrighted work--and you better hope to god they're too busy to pursue that legal action against you.

It's more disrespectful of the artist to inhibit derivative works.

Um, no it's not. That's someone's intellectual property. That someone did not make the model so that you could go about rescaling it and sticking it wherever you like. I'll say it again, if you don't have the express permission from the author, you're out of luck, that's tough beans. And that person has the right to pursue legal action if he/she feels that you've done them wrong should you decide to steal from them anyway.

Draser mate, don't rip stuff from other games and intellectual properties to put in your map. You'd do much better if you made a map based on the layout of the original without using any Star Wars content.

~stuff~

No, no and no, again.
Just because someone has been credited does NOT mean you have their permission, and hence does NOT make it OK to use something they've created and published. Publishing your work doesn't mean that you give up all and any rights to the work you've made. Therefore just because it's published doesn't mean you're free to re-release it or modify it.

In this particular instance we're talking about content from a commercially released videogame which is undoubtedly protected by copyright law, meaning that copying or modifying it's content without express permission is not only unethical but illegal.

The only way that it would be OK to republish someone else's work is if you obtained express permission from the original author and publisher before hand.

I'll give you an example. Bob goes to work and creates a great model of a car. It's a car he's loved for years and has been waiting to put it into a game for a while. The game finally gets published months later and he's really happy to see that his car made the cut. After work the next day he goes home and fires up TF2. He joins a custom server and starts playing. "What the shit!" he exclaims when he see the car that he spent a week modelling in a map released by "1337M4pp3R". Nowhere in the map does it say it's his model, nowhere in the in-game info either. Somewhere buried deep in a forum somewhere on the net there may be a post that states this model was made by him but no-one will ever see it. The next day he goes to work and contacts the companies legal department.

Alternatively, how would you feel if someone decompiled your maps and used portions of your designs without asking you first? Imagine their map went official because of the work that you put in, would you not be annoyed?
