Hey, this is my first time using hammer. However after several days I feel that I have got the hang of alot of the basic functions. I have infact already drawn out, and started on making my first map.

My question is what is the best way of making terrain, and how should I go about doing it.

By terrain I mean the uneven ground, and the rocky cliffs. I tried using the displacment tool, but the results were pretty poor. Some advice for a begginer on making terrain would be nice.

For anybody who's intrested here is the start I made on my map (Blu base)

Thanks in advance ;-)

When making terrain, if you've got a block that's 1024x1024 make it power of 4, and size it down accordingly (like if it's 512x512, make it power of 3, and 256x256 power of 2) and then when actually displacing, set the radius to something fairly high to start with, such as 128 or 256, and then set the distance to about 2 or 4. That way you'll get natural looking results. That's all I can suggest for now

Thanks for the advice, displacment seems like a fine art.

Any opinions on that spawn building for Blu I made, (seeing as it is my first time in hammer ;p)?

Use "sculpt" and not "paint geometry." It's much easier to use, as it shows you which direction it'll be pushing and you can specify directions such as "relative to screen" so you can look at a corner and push it directly away from you. Holding...alt? I believe will toggle it between positive and negative offset.

The downside is that the brush size is relative to the screen (so getting closer makes it more accurate, zooming out effects more points). And sometimes it doesn't register the click.

But all-in-all I've found it to be a much easier tool to work with.

Youme's guide
Logo's tutorial
Nutomics tutorial

I've only actualy read Youme's guide but I think I'll be looking into the other two soon. They both seem very helpful.

As for your start, it looks great, but are those fences meant to be part underground?

Thanks, I'll read those tutorials now.

Yes, I moved the fences into the ground to bring the overall height down, so it would fit snugly under the roof lip.

Is that a bad idea?
