Well i just checked through my files and my VMF is only 2kb when it should be 6,000 odd. It appears hammer crashed whilst saving my file.

\o/

Lost about 5 days work.

Fix.

I over wrote the VMF with my VMX (changed the VMX to VMF through notepad) so i got it all back.

grazr there is other for this.. have you save it on autosave? if you have it will screw you the entire map, when you send it to dropbox.

I always work with dropbox running and I save all my map work in dropbox, that way if hammer dies on me or anything else happens it's really easy to revert to an older version.

if you have it will screw you the entire map, when you send it to dropbox.

I'm a tad confused as to what this means, but if I'm saying the same thing then sorry for the repost.

Nobody understands what Ric says.

The file became corrupted during a fail save so i dunno if that would have made a difference; by the time i realised what had happened the synced DB file would have automatically been over written too.

I've been saving new files between major changes for such an occasion like this, i've had VMF's corrupt in the past (and subsequently knew through past experiences that VMX's were like sister VMF files). But garaunteed this stuff happens when you're just about undertake backup actions.

That or i don't understand what you're saying.

Either way, disaster was averted.

You can revert to previous versions.

If you select a folder in your dropbox as your save location in hammer (not autosave, just regular save), then if anything goes wrong you can load up the dropbox website, navigate to that file and download a previous version.

All my vmf files are saved in my dropbox for this very reason.

I have this quite often, lol. The best way is indeed to change the file name from thecrashedmap.vmx to somethingelse.vmf.

I once had a corrupted .vmf and .vmx though. So you better save you map with different filenames often - or at least that's what I do.
