Making a funnel?

Ok, so my map that im trying to make has a bunch of odd round shapes to it. How hard is it to make a funnel shape? like you are in a giant funnel, and the big part is facing up, hmm...an example: Kinda like the big bowl in hydro (i think thats the name of it) except the sides are much steeper?

also, does anybody know how to make a cone shape?

Off the top of my head, here's how I would go about it.

Create two cylinders, one with the largest circumference, one below/above it with the smallest circumference. Make sure both have the same amount of segments. Next, create cube brushes and vertex-manipulate them into place between each cylinder. You shouldn't break any geometry this way, but if you want to be sure, hit alt+p and check for invalid solids.

An important note is that when you create your cylinders, you want to make sure you vertex manipulate every point onto the grid. Hit the '[' and ']' keys to change grid size. At the smallest size you'll see virtually no change in aesthetic, but having all the points on grid will equal faster render times. Here's a video that's somewhat relevant

Hope that helps

I actually recommend Twister, which is like a automatic displacement/brush generator. Very useful for making things like cones and domes.

It is possible to do funnels using it, by creating a brush cone and clipping a hole in that. However unfortunately, the lower the power, the uglier it is, heres one I made in about 3 minutes using the lowest power and an 8 sided cylinder.

Don't worry about the textures, just click fit all on in texture edit and it will align them for you. Just dont turn the power too high, otherwise it becomes really fiddly to edit.

Make a cylinder, and use vertex manipulation to bring the edges of one side to the middle. Select "yes" when it asks to merge vertices.

Just make sure it's func_detail or vbsp will cry.

Make a 360-degree arch, and vertexedit the middle verts down. Subdivide top faces for extra awesome.

If you think it's ready for a public release, start a thread in the Maps forum.

To make the cone, Hammer has a "spike" option, and with enough faces it becomes a cone (although it dose have a 32 side limit).
