I did another play on photoshop with my tablet:

This time I was using a bit of a different method, I drew the skull in rough at school (I had two real human skulls as a reference) and didn't plan on taking the drawing any further, just leaving it as a 2 min sketch. Then I decided to paint it so I scanned it in and painted underneath it (not over the top)

With the pencil overlayed on top:

Oh yeah, its also not finished, probably wont get finished either.. but that doesn't matter.

Cool. In general I suck at realism, as I'm not exactly a fan of it, however, I wish I could get that life like look. Anyways, one critique, the nose looks far to pointy, and seems to need to be more rounded, but then again I don't have two skulls in front of me.

BTW: What tablet did you end up getting?

Damn, you're a good artist Youme. You should do a WIP from start to finish sometime. Would be really cool to see how something like this is done.

heh I'd never finish it, it would remain a wip for all eternity....

I've got a wacom graphire 3 - thats A5, which sounds small, but I can't imagine an A4 one being any better. my old A6 one was aweful, absolutely terrible, I have a really unsteady hand so the smallest wobble on the A6 one was translated into a huge kink in the line onscreen :(

I strive to be less realistic, but whenever I do it always ends up looking like a 3 yr old did it...

It was quite a shock when the teacher said the skulls were real, as I was holding one to my forehead looking straight into its eye sockets at the time, heh

Nice. Although it looks like the poor bugger had a craniotomy at some point, probably after death.

This also inspired me to get a (cheap - Wacom Bamboo) graphics tablet, as trying to paint with a mouse is basically impossible. I'll probably not be much better with the tablet, as I'm not really an artist, but at least it should be easier.

Yeah painting with a mouse is about as easy as writing a message on a wall using your own heart as a brush (and surviving the incident)
Which is to say: Its impossible (unless you happen to have a spare heart or you are an anime character, in which case you have enough blood to last the entire message and until the ambulence crew arrive to take you to hospital)

And yes, both skulls had their brains removed.... they had little hooks on either side of their ears to hold their scalp on, but I ommited those.

I'm not really an artist either, I have the technical ability, but I lack the creativity to make things from scratch.

I do believe I said..... :p

This time I was using a bit of a different method, I drew the skull in rough at school (I had two real human skulls as a reference) and didn't plan on taking the drawing any further, just leaving it as a 2 min sketch. Then I decided to paint it so I scanned it in and painted underneath it (not over the top)

But if that isnt clear enough for you:
  1. I scanned in my 2 minute sketch (black and white and basicly just outlines)
  2. Fiddled the levels to get the lines really black
  3. Set it to overlay (or multiply, not sure wich)
  4. Painted the green on a new layer underneath it
  5. Painted my pallet layer above the drawing layer
  6. Painted the skull on a new layer between the green and drawing turning the drawing layer on and off as I went.
