Making displacement ramp... hill things...

I've been smashing my head with this for a couple of days now :)

I'm trying to make a hill similar to the one at the start of Badwater or Upward :) The ones with the rocks on either sides and nice displacements :)

I was wondering what the best way to do this was. I started by using a series of flat solids and trying to build the rough shape of my hill (kind of a 'C' shape) thinking I could turn it into displacements after, but I ended up with a large number of invalid solids, so I reset this to start again.

Was I using the right technique, just messed up in the practice, or is there a better way to do this?

Open valve's maps in hammer, shift+a, select the displacements, DESTROYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Then you can see what their base for the displacements was.

Basically with ramps you want make the shape you want first the vertex tool.
another thing: for a displacement ramp with sides, the brush must not be a triangle shape.
For example:

You have the right idea, you just have to learn to avoid creating invalid solids.

The way they did it in Badwater was to make the rough shape of the hump with solids (textured with nodraw), then do a thin layer of brushes over it which become the displacements.

Yeah, I suppose you could create the sides with another brush. But do what ever is easier for you.
