Dimensions: 128 x 128 x 128
Texture scale: Your discretion; but may be negotiated.

Compliments: Granary/farm theme.

The model will be used extensively throughout my map.

The map is also being entered into the major mapping contest #5.

The model is also re-usable by many other people if you choose to make the model public. I do not demand it remain unique to my work.

TF2 does have a cylindrical hay barrel but it is only a skybox model.

Do you want it to be a simple cylinder with a hay texture? Or do you want the actual model to have some detail?

It would be nice to have some detail. It will be used in the play area and out of bounds area.

If i wanted it to be that simple i'd just use displacements.

For reference, this is the wireframe for the rectangular one:

(The collision model is just a beveled block)

How about this:

screenshot_haybale.jpg

I needed a break from making vines. :p

1200 polys, which is higher than I'd prefer, but since the little haybale has 700-1400 (depending on LOD) I figure it's good enough. Even the skybox one has 400 something. I didn't bother with LODs for this since I figured it's a more important prop than the 700 poly haybale, heh. If you want LODs, I can add them but it'll take a day or three before I can get back to it.

Two textures, both at 1024x1024 (you can resize those to 512x512 if they're too big for your tastes). If this will work, let me know, I'll put it in the downloads section.

Painting over a real hay texture. Also, lots of random grunge, hair, straw, etc photoshop brushes. :)

What about some polygons that branch outward from the bale that use "alphatest" to simulate scraggly looking hay? This would be similar to how hair done on character models.

There's swirls on the side, but they're faint. They don't show up well in the goldrush lighting.

Hrm. Okay, I'll strengthen up the side swirls, see about adding some LODs and some scraggly straw polygons. Might be a couple of days before I put it up in the downloads section though. :)

Yea, pretty much what Rexy and Booj suggested. This is looking great but those 2 things would make it perfect.

You could try adding an LOD that removes the scraggly hay and even the poly details where the 2 ropes are. I don't mind waiting longer for LOD models.

Also, could you make the rope darker so it's almost black for some added contrast.

Thanks :D

edit: Oh and i can't tell from the angle but they're looking a little boxy still. You probably don't need to add more poly's just move them so they're more round.

Forgot about this until today. Version two:

screenshot_haybale_v2.jpg

* Rounded it a bit more
* Enhanced swirly-ness
* Polygon count reduced to ~1100
* LODs of 700 @ 40m and 350 @ 60m
* Narrower & darker rope
* Scragglier (vanishes at first LOD)

Also, I didn't really know what I wanted to accomplish with the scraggly stuff, and... it shows. But let me know if it looks good despite that, and I'll pack it up and stick it in the downloads section.

By scraggly stuff i kinda imagined something similar to detail sprites on grassy textures. On second thought though it'd probably be easier/simpler to create a second alpha layer to the outside, where it is tied, like the second alpha layer on the waterfall prop. But that might be over doing it for what the prop is.

So feel free to upload this version and move onto other projects. It'll be great to finally replace my place holder bales :D
