My Mayan themed Artpass entry. Obviously still a work in progress, I'm working from C backwards so. :p After like 4 months of learning to map and never getting out of an alpha map, I finally get to learn how to detail!! :D

I'm using ferns as a temporary replacement for vine models, before anyone asks why theres ferns on the walls. :p I'm hoping to add more green to the walls in the future. :)

The story behind it is that Red have discovered a temple in the Jungle with a mysterious idol with interesting powers*. And Blu being the jerks that they are, want to interrupt them. :)

Cheers!

* Powers are yet to be added. :p Hoping to make the eyes glow. :)

Im enjoying all of these mayan entries so far! This one looks quite good, butI dont really think those terminals fit in with the theme--especialy when they clip into a fence :p

It's weird on 2 of the screenshots i found places that instantly caught my eye. But i don't know all the assets of this theme, so i don't know which was entirely your work and which only "inspired by".

The entrance/exit on the stone wall looks very nice - though i'd loved to see the stones being more accurate and not clipped randomly. basically as if one took out the stones that were in the way. You did it on the lower part but not so much at the top :/

The spotlight situation with the welding machine and the railings makes it look like an actual excavation theme. cool beans :)

While these are only 2 tiny tiny tiny tiny spots on the entire map, if you put that attention on the higher scale on your map, this might work :)
Because the rest of the map looks very bland and uninspired. And i have to say the theme and the availabe assets are reaaaally limiting, in my opinion. It should be really hard to pull of a unique thing, if you shouldn't be able to create some custom stuff for that - or let it be created.
But i really hope that you can pull it off :)
one thing i could imagine, that you kinda make a crack or hole in the walls, like you did on the entrance i described for the first linked image, and you try to make the player believe there's more behind the walls than there actually are. that way you could break up that very repetitive stone wall textures all over the map. should be worth a try :)

this is the one and only screenshot i had in mind for that :D

Wow, this is one of my favourite entries just because of how it feels so right. When I was younger, my parents used to take me to disneyland and this reminds me so much of the things in the Indiana Jones themed ride.

The computer terminals kind of remind me of things like James Bond.

It would be great to see more gold and plants. I'm really looking forward to watching this one develop.

Hmm, I kinda had my hand forced with this bit. How do you explain the glass windows in a Mayan temple? Well, I can't atleast, nor can I remove the glass or make it just another wall, and since Red has been making themselves at home inside this temple I figured I might try and make it look like Red is turning it into a base of sorts.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6104284/screenshots/artpass_attempt1/glasswindow.jpg Is kinda what I was going for, perhaps I need to make it abit more obvious. I was going to make Red's spawn to be a little further along construction wise. And the handrail doesn't clip into the terminal, but I'll move it along abit to keep you happy. :p

Hmmm, it was supposed to be that way for the top ones atleast, not sure whats going on there.

Yeah, excavation / hidden base is the theme, although that said it should always be the theme with maps like these, thats what annoyed me about Egypt, it was like both teams had been time travelling rather than the cool idea of both teams raiding a long lost temple. I think for that reason I may have to put out the torches in the first corridor and put in man made lights instead, even though they look really nice. :(

Unfortunately I can't model or texture, so I'm going to have to try and cheat and do the best I can to create the theme with very little. :p To be honest I think the brick texture does a pretty good job, combined with rain + green grass outside I think it may be enough to sell that its supposed to be a Temple in the Jungle + whatever useful props I can find in the Swamp Pack.

Regarding the walls, I've removed bricks elsewhere in the map, but I might remove some more. The rest of the walls I was hoping to add tree root decals / vines and if it doesn't look too silly, have bricks half falling out of the wall. It'd be pretty cool actually to have hidden rooms visible through the holes in the wall. :D

Yeah, I've been hearing scary stories along those lines about YM and the sources for the idol (YM and The Lost Idol Sources coming to a cinema near you!), I PM'ed him on here to get permission but haven't heard from him yet.

use env_sprite to add a basic glow to the eyes :D

I tried that (well, I think I did anyway), and it didn't turn out so well. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6104284/screenshots/artpass_attempt1/artpass_valvebase_attempt10016.jpg So I removed it until I had time to figure how what was going on. :p

Those were the two things I had in my mind while making it to be honest. :p I was watching Raiders and I saw the Idol in the temple and I was like :O!! YM's model is a recreation of that, it was too perfect not to be used. :p

I wanted to have some fun with the Idol after C is capped actually, parent the Idol to one of the cappers and it could go nuts killing everyone nearby (thats why you don't be touchin that!). We'll see how I go anyway.

Cheers all. :)
