Picture it; Florida, mid-1960's.
Two companies, Builders League United and Reliable Excavation Demolition are working together on a secret rocket launch to test several new anti-missile defenses they have developed.
They developed these defenses and the rocket launch site together, as the CEOs of these companies wanted to try working together...just once. After a close call with several suspicious locals in the area, they moved all the scientists inside of a new high-security wall, leaving a lot of scientific equipment and two break rooms outside to decay. As the projects developed, however, both companies decided they wanted the entire compound to themselves. Ironically, both CEOs made this decision at the very same moment. So, after evacuating the scientists, nine mercenaries from each team were sent in to do some acquiring...

Although it doesn't scream Florida at me, it's looking nice for a first map. How about an overview shot?

It might not scream Florida quite yet because, as of now, nothing exists outside the playable area :p

I added the overview shot, although I think the artistic shots are much more valuable. And I should note that this isn't my first map, just my first KOTH map and my first map that I'm releasing on here. I've made others that my friend runs on his server and only his server.

i think what you gotta ask yourself in a nutshell is "does this place make sense ?"
your sole detail object are computer terminals everywhere :)
the computer on stairs, where one couldn't place a chair in front of it, since you need to pass by on the stairs. also on various other locations randomly placed computers.

you thought a nice story/theme for your map. i think now you gotta think and research both in google and tf2-world how such a place might look like. what are some of the details, how could a room with scientific equipment be built up without lookin random gameplay-destroying or artificial.
if you incorporate such thoughts into your next progress steps the quality of your map will make a huge quality increase

The computer terminals at the top of the stairs are actually something I forgot to delete, ironically. They're left over from a scraped idea where that building was arranged very differently. Thanks for the advice though; after this layout gets tested by one of my friends, I'll start thinking about different kinds of detailing (although this IS only a1 :p).

Also...computers aren't my ONLY detailing. There's grass and a tree stump on each side :)

well, this was of course a case of exaggeration to bring my point across.
we'll see where this one goes :)
