Why the gamedays are delayed...

Well, I know that a lot of people are probably looking for another game day thread, but there is a small problem, I am busy as hell. Its 3:30 am and I just got back home from studying.

Yesterday I got home at 2:00 am... Last week midterms started, and of course all my teachers also assigned homework.

So, this week I have projects / exams every day of the week and next week is looking better, but still not good.

I am probably going to be out of the loop for a bit longer just to let everyone know.

<mac pokes all teachers who've assigned homework>

After school you'll get work and that can be pretty exhausting too, but the advantage is that (most of the time) you can just leave after 8 hours :)

<mac sends ryodoan some random happy thoughts>

Thats one way to look at it, the other way is to look at it and realize that you are taking an entire extra quarter of classes for the same price.

Can't someone else step into ryodoan's shoes and organise one for once?

You have my sympathies ryodoan. The last two weeks were round1 of midterms, etc for me, and I'm also on quarters. Hope you make it through alright.

I suppose I'm lucky, as my current project is nearing production deadline (with sometimes workdays of 12 hours)...
Seems the end-of-terms / exams and project deadlines are always when the sun starts to shine and you definately don't want to be indoors.

Here's a thought. Rather than scheduling our get-together every week, lets just make it a permanent event. Every weekend, including friday night, we can say that all members are encouraged to hop on any of our servers and get to know their fellow mappers a bit.

I have a bit of a break today, next exam is not until Friday (wednesday now).

2 Exams down, but unfortunately it seems something is wrong with my Axim which I use as a planner, not good. The batteries are either dead or it somehow bricked itself (turns on, Dell symbol flashes, turns itself off). The problem is I keep all my homework assignments / exam days / ect in my Axim and it has not been backed up to my computer for over 2 weeks...

In any case, the first exam was one of my GPA booster electives called "Race, Class, and Crime" I dominated it with a 98% on the exam, then we got a 7% curve taking me to 105%.

Second exam was today, part of my core curriculum, Algorithms I. I was pretty worried about this exam because he homework he gives us is really hard, taking upwards of 24 hours (cumulative) to finish. We usually start on it days before its due and work on it a little bit each day, because otherwise is physically impossible to complete. Not because of volume, only like 10-15 problems, but because you really need to think about each problem for a while. In any case, he made the exam about 100x easier than the homework, essentially the exam was pulled straight from the homework and class lessons, so since we reviewed both of those before the exam I think I got at least a 90% on it, but there were only 3 small 2 pt questions I know for sure I missed.

So, at the moment I am taking a short break, then getting ready to start studying for quiz in another class that starts at 4:00 pm. Oh Joy...

I have no problem with someone else organizing things, just please try to follow the template I have running, although I do need to re-organize the game day template to make some items more clear.

Oh, and its the UK's turn to have the Saturday Gameday.

Here is a brief checklist:

  • Make a post on the calender with the template
  • Make a post on Colts Playground directing people to the thread with a brief summery (date, GMT time, ect)
  • Schedule the event on the Steam Community for Saturday + Sunday.
  • Keep the 1st post updated, I recommend a closing time of Friday at 5:00 pm.

Well, here are some problems I see with going every week:

  • We still need to plan it, get map submissions, update posts, make posts in all the right places, upload the maps, set the rotation, set the redirect, ect... It can be a bit draining to do it every week, maybe if we alternate planners it could work.
  • If we start friday night, map submissions need to end on Thursday, and most mappers it seem like to have the extra time going up to Friday.
  • I also worry about getting enough submissions to keep it going on an every weekend basis, especially since the contest is winding down.
  • Finally, I am not sure what attendance would be like on an every week basis.
All in all, I am not opposed, but I think it needs some more work before we decide to do it every week, there are lots of questions that need to be answered and details that need to be worked out.

yeah...if its every 2 weeks there seems to be more people that want their maps tested, so filling up the rotation isn't terribly difficult
while admittedly a gameday every week would be great, its not really that feasible

though...I still want my earlier suggestion of making this sites server into a popular server going, it essentially has the same issues of a gameday every week, so...ill be watching how this turns out

Honestly, getting enough submissions shouldn't be an issue; no reason why you can't put the same version of the map on two weeks in a row if you haven't managed to get an update out yet. The more testing the better, right? And we could always fill in slots with good completed maps or even stock maps in order to keep players' interest up.

The three or four weeks that we had it running continuously, I've not seen problems with a lack of players most of the time. I think the administrative problems are the greatest.

I believe we can do a weekly event, and should. It would mean getting three or four people who can handle the necessary tasks (forum postings, map uploading to servers & redirects, steam community notices, etc. as per Paul's list), and having them put together a schedule for who does what when, two weeks in advance or so.

I attend the game days regularly, and would be happy to help out organising them, if that would help. Please PM me if there's anyway I can help make this a regular occurrence.

Yeah, so sometime over Thursday night my body decided it was balls to the walls tired of me abusing it and decided to give me a reality check in the form of some wacko sickness that has my throat killing me, a splitting headache 1/2 the time, an annoying hacking dry cough (which then irritates my sore throat), along with the lovely duo of cold chills / hot sweats alternating about every 30 minutes.

And that was just Thursday night. Since then (now Saturday) my right ear has started to hurt and I think it might be an ear infection (Although for the most part the cold chills have disappeared, thank god)

So yeah, in my free time at school between classes I have begun working on my version of the Event Mapper program but when I am at home the only thing I really want to do is sleep, however I have now slept so much that my back has started to hurt (go figure).

In any case, I have been haunting the forums as an ethereal ghost and I think I am going to try to get another game day in the works for this coming weekend. Stay tuned.

*Edit* yeah, about those exams and school work that was delaying the game days, not sure if I made a post on this but I ended up dominating the Algorithms exam, and I think bombing the Probability and Statistics II exam, which is kinda ironic because I thought it was going to be the other way around....
