I've been getting into the groove of TF2 mapping recently so I decided today to register here. Except I couldn't, because my name was already taken, because apparently I registered here over a year ago and didn't say a thing.

So here I am. Name's Gerk, that's my Steam name too and I play on servers usually in the US/West. I'm intrigued by almost all fronts of game development and this makes for a nice summer hobby of sorts. I came here looking for input and tutorials to help speed me along on my quest, so I honestly hope you guys don't disappoint me and that I do the same in return. ;)

Excellent.

Man, this server is super-active...this probably means there's a lot of work done here, so that's kind of a disincentive already. I mean, I enjoy doing what I do when I do it, but at the same time I've barely heard of any custom maps outside of the featured community ones. Considering the wild fluctuation in quality of the maps selected, I always thought there was kind of a short supply of mappers.

Either way I hope to have a Proof of Concept map done soon. It'll probably be an arena, since that's nice and easy and small and symmetrical.

EDIT: And by proof of concept I mean just a general shape with the tron-style generic floors/ceilings/walls, mostly. Still soaking in the design elements of TF2 and learning how "officially" to detail the map and work with things like cave walls and hint/areaportal brushes and all the jazz.

There are tons of skilled mappers here, of varying degrees of skill, of course. Myself being shit tier! You just get better by looking at what other people have done, asking questions and simply by trying it out.

In my opinion, a small asymmetrical 2 cp map is easier to make than anything that is symmetrical. Symmetry is incredibly annoying sometimes. But that might just be me. :p
