Hi, I'm not only new to the forums, I'm making my first map! I have quite a lot of questions to ask, and if this thread isn't in the right place please notify me/move it! Anyways here goes nothing:

My map is island themed, with a lot of twists so don't worry about another goddamn island map.

It's 5 point CP, and while I have a lot of ideas for stuff around the points, I cant really think of anything interesting in between them, I included two symmetrical mountain ranges, but still have a lot of empty space!

What can I use to fill that space and make it interesting/fit in with the motif/ and still be balanced?

How do I make hemi-spheres or cylinders using the brush tool?

Should I make the map out of one giant brush with displacements or should I break it up, and if so why should I do this?

How can I cut holes into my mountains for tunnels WITHOUT USING CARVE? Or is there another way to make a large mountain and include tunnels in it?

Thanks a lot in advance, I look forward to posting the map and eventually play testing!

I'd start with sparadic buildings, rocks, and hills. I'd recommend avoiding trees for numerous reasons.

All really depends on the theme of the map.

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Hammer_New_Objects_Toolbar or vertex manipulation.

Break it up, later as you learn and understand the tendicies of hammer and how stuff works you'll know how to optimize and create a playable map.

You divide the brushes that make up the displacements. Heres a great tutorial: http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=798

See you later, good luck!

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I've read the optimization tutorial, and I understand how I can work it out. Thanks a lot for your post!
Why avoid trees however?

Im talking more about the evergreens which have several points against them. The main ones being green isnt a very nice color in tf2's colour scheme and the second being the trees have pretty bad physics allowing players to shoot through them, hide sentries or hide themselves.
