i am currently making my first map, and had the idea of making the play area surrounded by a glass dome so it looks almost like a see through m&m or skittle but thicker. there would obviously be a floor that is flat. i want it to make it seem almost jetson-esque with a big pillar holding it up or just a floating pod i havent got that far yet.

but for my main question, how do i go about making the ceiling, floor, and walls arched?

Bummer i made a tutorial about this.. exactly but took it down to fix it once i realased a map so people had it to reference.

let me first start by saying..

DO NOT USE ARCH TOOL! *period*

now that thats out of the way, do use Vertex.
The way i do it is i build the frame on 8 grid, then i build the glass on a 4 grid and notch the glass grid 1 unit in.

Here is a picture of how i mean.

arch.jpg

Notice on the grid shot there is 3 lines, its for detail. the furthest out is the beam, the second notch in is the glass frame and the 3rd notch in is the glass itself.

I'm a noob and I can't get this.

What are the horizontal yellow lines?

Also, did you build the arch through stacking individual blocks or face splitting using the vertex tool?

I build them using blocks and vertexing them.

They are built with nodraw and textured glass on the outside which is why in hammer you see yellow in the glass.

I liked your arches, but why no arch tool? I used them for dm_biosphere and didn't had any problems :)

Where did this tutorial go? I was going to link it to someone to help them, but it looks like you took it down?

It was a really excellent tutorial, I hope we can get it back :)

Beware when using the vertext edit tool. you cant have any brush with a face that looks into itself (imagine all the lines of that brush going out forever, if any cut into that shape, the brush is invalid and hammer will choke on it and spit out something horrible after you compile)
So when making arches make sure you use multiple brushes.
