Urgh.. I find this sickening.

BP begins to funnel off leaking Gulf of Mexico oil

BP IN NUMBERS
  • * Profits in 2009: $13.96bn
  • * Clean-up costs so far: $990m
  • * Estimated cost of sand barrier project: $360m
  • * Dividend payment 2009: $10.5bn
  • * BP scheduled to make a first-quarter dividend payment to shareholders on 21 June
  • * At its worst, BP saw 34% wiped off its value

For the damage that was done and is still doing and still WILL do it hardly hit them. Perhaps if they spent some of that ridiculous profit in safety...

Your government needs to shut the company down and draw off all capital left to even try to pay the damage.

As long as the penguins aren't harmed, I'm not harmed (meaning nothing travels to New England), my friends aren't harmed, the world doesn't explode, I'm set.

Oh, and I need just one hurricane to go through and pick up some oil, and then lightning to hit so that the oil catches on fire in the hurricane...

Just one, please. Let it end quick - I just wanna see it.

This is just the beginning folks. The battle for dominance in oil has just only begun. We will be living completely differently in 20 years, guaranteed. Hope everyone remembers how to grown their own food.

This is where I get my "all americans are morons" stereotype from.

Or maybe it's just the ones in government.

Then again, 40% of the USA is young-earth creationist. Crazymuch?

Numerous, we have little control over who runs our large businesses. Also, BP IS a british company. :p

Either way, this is a travesty and the fault of MANY people, not just BP. However, they're not handling it very well.

I don't have too much else to say. It could take them months to close this thing, during that time millions of animals will die and hundreds of miles of coastline will be destroyed. It's a terrible thing with little way to stop it at this point. :/

this is it:
our government hasn't got the balls to step in. obama doesn't know jack squat on how to fix the issue. BP should have kept up to date standards to what the oil rig was. And last off, most of which the stereotypes come from are retarded politicians or upper class fools who don't know what living in hood is like.

Let me remind some of the posters of one thing. BP stands for BRITISH petroleum.

American company? Harumph!

Quite frankly, the worst part is how the safety measure screwed up. "Oh, let's just send a robot down to turn a shutdown valve. Oh what a shame, we can't find it."

If they hadn't done any illegal before, they deserve to be prosecuted now for their handling of this mess.

The worst part is that they can easily take the blow in their resources.

Here's to hoping our technology can keep up the pace and make stuff like electric cars and solar power stations efficient enough to be viable for the majority of people until then.

Actually, BP merged with Amoco, which is an American-based company.

Given how large and multinational most oil companies are, it's moot where their headquarters may be anyway. They pretty much work under their own laws thanks to years of political string pulling.

It's the EPA's fault, frankly.

If they had let them drill in the 400ft deep water instead of the 5000tf deep area, they'd have been able to get divers down there and fix it the day it happened. Or, more likely, it wouldn't have happened at all, since the rig would have had solid legs instead of floating.

I also live in Pensacola, BTW

duuuude this has been like the biggest oil spill ever and it's barely on people's minds

im sad ;_;

Where do you live? All I've been hearing constantly is that this is doomsday.

My opinion:

This is bad. But where have the unrealistic expectations for BP come from? People are treating them like they purposely are spilling oil into the gulf. And it's just not right. BP is working as quickly as they can to fix it, and they are helping with the environmental cleanup. What more can they truly be expected to do? Reverse the leak so it sucks all the oil back in or something?
