Since I imagine a lot of you looked at the polypack contest and went "hmm cool" then haven't looked at it again since I'll mimic my thread over there, here.

I'm going with the medic with a rough theme of heavy duty medicine.

So far I've thumbnailed medigun and backpack replacements. Started modeling the medigun as well as another cosmetic item I'll reveal later (once I can figure out how to generate good normal maps)

Medigun thumbnails:

General feel was that #3 and #5 were best so I started working on a merged version:

No one had suggested doing a backpack replacement for the medic and as I'm a fan of non-hat cosmetic I thought the backpack would be a perfect place to start.

With the backpack, medigun and the other cosmetic I'm working on I've got the three required models however I feel the more I make, the better a chance I have of winning. I may even attempt a second class if I have enough time after exams.

Then my just for fun functionality stuff (since it's not part of the contest but cool anyhow)

For the medigun I like thumbnail #1 the most, because its somehow different from medigun and kritzkrieg, but still suitable.

Backpack #3 seems also quite interesting. So the fluid in there gets vaporized and comes out as a "healing beam - steam" ?

Yeah overall majority has said #3 and #1 for the backpacks. It would be pretty silly to do anything other than merge them before I work more on the backpack.

Looks very heavy, nice.

Put something glowing in these things underneath, similar to the healing beam :)

looks really sweet. i'd go for #7. If you could make the red stuff move like jarate, that'd be great! :D

Also, I was wondering how you make those nice silhouette drawings! They look so cool!

Can't say I'm a fan of the liquid tanks thing. I quite like the electrical/capacitor aspect of the original. What if you put some little electrically-related gadget inside the tank? A coil, or one of those things that is on top of the default pack.
(remember the pack gets a particle effect)

However most importantly... would it be doable to have a tank of liquid that sloshes around in a way that looks decent?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can do that with Jigglebones. The boomer bile in Left 4 Dead 2 has a sloshing effect.

#7 but I wouldn't mind seeing a tube come out of it. (Seems a bit plain compared to the others but it looks the right shape).

It makes me think of District 9 way too much. I'm not just saying that because District 9's weapons looked a lot like this and therefor "every weapon design similar will bare reference to it", BUT you could have implemented the angled capacitors (or what ever they are) in a way that less mimics District 9 weapon designs.

Yeah district 9's stuff looks far more vicious than this though. I'll admit that I was thinking of district 9 and that coil gun video when I was doing the thumbs with the angled canisters

Solid colour except for that dent, too dark, needs more tape
