Apparently there's another Valve-Contest starting over at the everamazing folks of polycount.com

Team Fortress 2: Polycount Pack:
http://www.polycount.com/team-fortress-2-polycount-pack/

Contest Progress can be followed in here , once it kicks in:
http://www.polycount.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=47

Basically you're meant to create 3 items (weapon, hat, building) just like the contribution stuff in general but with some extra prices. I thought even though there's not too many modelers around, we could all follow the awesomeness of these talents, cause they have provided A LOT of the custom hats being released by valve so far - maybe you recognize some of them in here:
http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69164

RULES:

* You must be a member of Polycount
* You must create a Work In Progress thread in the Contests and Challenges Forum for your entry and must show your progress from start to finish
* All work created MUST be your own
* You must be able to supply all source files of the finished products
* You must create a minimum of three items for only one particular class
* Items must be themed to Team Fortress 2 and should fit in the Team Fortress 2 universe and time period (e.g. No clown suits for the Heavy Weapons Guy!)
* Contest deadline: 00:01 PST, June 28th, 2010 (5 weeks after the start date!)

Well, just wanted to inform you good people of some cool new stuff coming up in the near future :)

Just want to clarify. Is this an official Valve contest? Or an official Polycount contest? Both?

it's a team effort.

can just quote what the site says:

The guys and gals at Valve were impressed with the number of items created by Polycount members in the first ever community content update, that now they are dedicating a community content update entirely to Polycount.

Would you love to have your work be apart of that update? Then read on for our newest contest here at Polycount!

Valve will be selecting the top entries to make it into the Team Fortress 2 Polycount Pack and the winners will be announced 2 weeks after the contest end date, on July 12th, 2010.

These items must be cohesively themed and fit within the Team Fortress 2 universe and time period.

But... that's what was said about the regular contribution system. And a lot of the things that have been added through it are totally not cohesive.

The guys and gals at Valve were impressed with the number of items created by Polycount members in the first ever community content update

So if they were the ones that made dumb stuff I am probably not going to be pleased with the outcome.

Further, isn't Polycount one of THE few places to go if you are a modeller? i.e. the probability of submissions coming from someone who is a member there is by default really high and meaningless?

i really don't understand why you're such a grumpy old man ;)

from the FAQ:
Q. What if I want to do something outrageous, like a clown suit for the Heavy? Can I still submit that?

A.’You’re more than welcome to submit whatever you like for this contest, and if its the best clown suit Valve’s ever seen you might even see it get released some day. But to win this contest, we’re challenging you with keeping your item theme within the TF2 universe. With that said, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that you wrote a convincing back-story in your submission as to why the Heavy has a clown suit and some how Valve just couldn’t resist making it part of the TF2 universe. (Don’t tell them we wrote that, we’ll deny everything!)

it's just harmless fun :)

and their site is down :(

Because the announcement caused heaps of users to view it, melting their server down.

At least I got to view it before that happened. Thanks for the news TF2maps!

Yeah this is a perfect excuse to dust off my measly modeling skills and put them to use. Finally I have a chance to undo the horrors of the Sniper Update!

I have no doubts this will produce 80% complete garbage, 10% decent stuff and 10% great/amazing things.

I really DO hope people put effort into this. Polycount is known to make great models and generally be a great modeling community, but I fear that the steamforum morons will turn it into a shitfest of box models on sticks.
