Why not allow guest comments as well?
Or this fancy facebook login integration. (Don't know if vBulletin 3 has a plugin for this)

btw, vBulletin 4 introduces native openID support :)

But wouldn't there be too many ''spammy'' comments?
Well unless they would be moderated by someone...

You mean spam by spambots? Or spam by idiots?
vB can add a captcha or other anti-bot things for guest-comments only.
Concerning stupid posts by guests: Either moderate guest-comments or deal with some stupid posts.
Or don't do it at all :O

Didnt we also want to add some plugin to the server to give feedback right out of the game?

No idea how difficult that would be.

I think OpenID is not a big risk in terms of bringing you the face-space-tube dregs. By contrast, I think Facebook-link could be counterproductive.

I use myopenid.com, but I use a "delegate" system, so that every openid-enabled system knows me by the hostname I registered for my blog. If myopenid.com goes out of business, I can easily switch to another or host the SSL stuff myself.

You could set up a new board for Contest maps with each map having it's own topic, and allowing Public members access into only that board.

That was it separates the member feedback from the public feedback :O

Plus, it's easier to manage...

All this is a lot of effort for people who can't be arsed to make their own effort to registor their email to this site. As Booj has already said. If they can't be arsed, we wont be missing them.

why are we catering to lazy scrubs
same reason why we are catering to elitist wannabe pros

EDIT: I mean random tf2l kids, not you

EDIT: and that reason is that all these groups of people are going to play the maps so all of them should like them.

OpenID/Facebook is great for blogs, but on a site like this, I think people are expected to hang around for a while and "become part of the community," as it were. Giving people a way to just pop in, leave comments, and pop out again sets the wrong tone.

Good point, but those "lazy scrubs" may have good feedback?

Just as ABS already said, if they can't be bothered to make an account their feedback might not be that important.

Well the fact is that feedback is best immediately after someone played the map. Just because someone is too lazy to sign up for a site doesn't mean their feedback is bad. I'll admit that I've been guilty of note commenting on/voting for something/etc by needing to sign up for a site. I just figure "I'll only comment this once, why would I sign up? I'm sure my comment isn't that important anyway." What if that comment was something that could have greatly improved the map, or inspired the mapper? Yes it could have just been "lol ur map sux" or something equally as dumb, but the fact of the matter is that we are making these maps for these people, so it'd be nice to hear from them.

It's a small hurdle that can be easily overcome just by registering. If that's not possible for the user, they can always suggest straight to the author if he's in the server, or they can add them on steam.

I would say the more comments the merrier for a map.

Those "lazy scrubs" are the people you are mapping for.

I disagree. Nobody wants to wade through a page of useless crap. Not that our patrons would do that, just that the sign up filters well between users just posting to annoy and users posting with reason.

I would be sympathetic if these were private boards and you had to register just to read the map threads.

But it's not. It takes so little time to register that if someone wants to say something worthwhile in a map discussion, registering to do it shouldn't be a problem.

I imagine it takes less time to register than to download a new custom map. If a person is so impatient they can't be bothered to register, they probably won't be playing your map anyway.

It would be interesting if people had to enter their Steam ID or community URL to vote or leave comments: You could use it to ensure they played the map on one of the official servers ;P
