Im trying to make a map look spytechey, but cant seem to do it. My geometry just seems off. What does spytech look like? What are some tips to for making spytech geometry?

Thanks in advance!

I'd say look at cp_junction, it's almost all spytech. cp_steel has quite a bit of spytech as well in red base.

Lots of computer monitors and wires, support beams, etc. Wall colors are usually fairly solid and cement - usually clean. Floors are often tile.

Do NOT look to Junction. It's just a horrible mess more than it is any particular theme.

The first place you should be looking is the original launch maps (2fort and Hydro in particular, Well a little too) as they have some of the best spytech Valve has made, though I feel all their maps since then have been lacking.

For custom maps the first things that come to mind that would be good to look at are Vector and HAARP.

Seconding Vector and HAARP for customs to look to. (Glad I'm not the only one who writes that in all caps by the way.) I'm not sure why you're hating on Junction for this though. For sure it's a sterling example of how not to make a map, but artwise I don't recall anything too out of place other than the random farm boxes and pallets in the middle of some of the floors.

I recall someone saying that spytech involved irregular angles that nonetheless complemented each other, whatever that means. Was it Icarus? Can't remember...

Look at 2fort's basement. That would be the best bet to start off.

Just go watch any classic 007 films, or even it's parodies.

Villains' bases have a somewhat 60's post-modern architecture. And TF2 Spytech tend to use very high contrasts of both lighting and colour.

For one it is highly over-detailed. The visual density is horrible and distracting. But I mainly said what I did because I never really thought of it as being a spytech map, so I was surprised to have it presented as such. It's too... rugged? dirty? for spytech, or something. Spytech should be clean and smooth, which Junction is not. It actually reminds me more of the Half-Life chapters primarily taking place in underground concrete tunnels and bunkers.

There's no point watching Dr.No now, that screenshot basically sums up the whole "spytech" in the movie. (I know, I watched it just for the spytech a while back.)

Mostly metal supports and such, using basic geometric shapes such as blocks and simple curves for focus points (like Control Points). Metal walkways lined with computers also comes to mind, and don't forget offices and such. If it's built into a mountain or such, some segments might have some of the bedrock exposed instead of a filled wall, which can really create the 'secret base' mood.

As others have said, check out some James Bond and Austin Powers movies. They feature a lot of evil-villain secret bases (especially Dr. No).

Those supports on the balcony are literaly directly ported to TF2!

EDIT: Wow, I was just looking around TC_hydro, and just realized that blu last point=/= red last point. Ive never been on the winning team as red, so I have actually never attacked to blu last point. Interesting!
