They say it varies, I am currently assuming this to mean it is probably based off an average of all players, so that it stays "fair" as habits change with the seasons or vacations. Knowing valve it's actually probably a lot of things factored into it.

eh, I am inclined to think the same way in most cases, 7 hours seems like a ridiculous limit to place...

yet ive played for about 4 hours after that blog update and found nothing...

You know, it has never taken me long to get the new weapons after each update through legititmate play and completing achievements. And while the hats look kind of neat, I don't get what the big deal is with them. They're purely visual. So I'm not sure why the drop system has been so heavily debated. I still don't have a hat (besides the easy to get ones) and I still don't care.

The only people who are suffering by this update are the people who don't idle, but actually play 24/7

  • If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly.
  • Everyone else will find items more frequently, and with greater regularity.
Wait... I hope this doesn't mean they literally decreased the drop rate for idlers compared to regular players. If my lowered drop rate is just the effect of the fact that I can't idle anymore, that's great (I'm glad I no longer feel a need to idle)... or does this mean I'll have an extra low drop rate compared to everyone else? If the latter is what they mean, that's just mean and unneccessary.

Its punishing idlers. Which is fair enough. I mean, this time they're not being stupid about it.

"You've idled and got many more weapons than someone who didn't, so now you'll get less while people who didn't idle will get more. Balance"

When was there ever a "need" to idle? I mean, you can get all the unlockables through achievements. The only thing left is hats, and like you really "need" them.

They mean regular players get around the same amount of hats as idlers do - idlers on average now get less hats, and regular players on average more, because of the maximum.

More like, "Valve directly addresses the issue of idling and is fine with people doing it", such as in this very blog post.

Hell no!

Look, suppose I program some web site and encrypt (technically, hash+salt) the passwords in the database. I'm not "fine" with people stealing the database and trying to brute force crack the passwords. Sure, I've made it "not worth their time" to try, but I'm working within certain technical and practical restrictions. I still 100% loathe the idea of anyone managing to steal my password table, and if I had a fooproof "punch intruder in face over internet" system I'd use it!

Similarly, Valve is also working within technical and practical restrictions on what is-or-is-not vulnerable to hacking/bypass and false positives when detecting and preventing idling. The fact that they have stopped short of some impractical draconian idler-permabanning system does not mean they're "fine with idling".

Yeah, that's what I'm hoped. Which I should really stress that I'm happy for.

I think its a good solution for achievement_idle on the first place of most played maps :p

A more effective solution to idling would have been to just not award items to people who are idling.

there should be a cap on how many items you can get per server, so that idlers, if they want to idle, they have to do it activly.

Wouldn't it be very easy to make a plugin that does as if you re-joining a server all the time?

I doubt there would be an effective way of effectively stopping idling without some kind of an item limit.

Also, whats the problem, you get more items, idlers get less. You should be happy :D

This update reminds me that i should probably play more tf2, i havent played about 0 hours in the last months (mapping stuff not included).

Realistically I am not concerned about the hats, what I'm annoyed by is the part where I still don't have all the weapons. Missing the gunboats, the pain train and the chocolate bar still.

There is one <_<
Though realistically all it would require is running retry every 10mins...

The pain train was the first drop I got after the relavent update. However I accidently crafted my eyelander (the excitement of seeing 3 swords, and the urge to merge them was overwhelming). In an effort to craft back my eyelander (which should have been simple) i got a second pain train.

This is why the system sucks.
