2:02 PM - The Political Gamer: does VB have a built in shoutbox or IRC client?
2:03 PM - -drp: not built in. but it does have some mods for it. we did try this about a year or two back, and it was barely used, so we stuck with the steam chat system.
2:03 PM - The Political Gamer: I think its worth another shot :)
2:03 PM - The Political Gamer: with more pople
2:04 PM - -drp: definately could be. tell you what, make a poll and see how much interest there is. if any other staff give you shit about it, let em know i said its ok.

I picked mIRC and Forum IRC. They're basically the same thing. Forum IRC would just be IRC on the forums, mIRC is IRC on mIRC. :p Either one we'd be setting up an IRC somewhere. Also, there's no reason we can't have Steam chat as well as IRC. And, it was also be useful to have IRC chat directly on the forums as more people might join it from here as opposed to only using external IRC programs or Steam Chat.

how about for the people who only know IRC as "My desire to get fucked in the ass"

where is the "I'm open to trying something but don't know what" option? :(

As I see it, they all have strong points.

Steamchat: easy access to the game.
IRC: easier to moderate, closer to other tf2 communities (chatrooms), can be accessed/connected to in many ways (mIRC, web applet, chatting apps like trillian, and so on)
Shoutbox: Personalized, can be configured/programmed to do what you need (most of the time), I'm mainly thinking of the 2f2f sb where livestreams are a huge part of the fun.

Not really sure what to vote for, but on paper the IRC option is the most flexible and reliable one.

Next question: why are there 2 options for IRC? it's just a chat protocol, how you connect to it is a different matter altogether.

I picked first and third, I'd like a forum integrated irc, if possible. It would be a bitch to download and figure out how to use 3rd party programs. I'm surprised Ventrilo wasn't an option either, since alot of us have mics *shrug*

I last tried to use IRC when I was 13. It's been years since then and I'm still scarred by the experience. Not to say I'm not willing to try it again, just that someone's going to have to hold my hand.

whoever said steam chat never goes down cough muffin man cough dbp cough i laugh at you.

its down right now ironically enough

irc is a necessity for just about any community. at least you guys can break out of the 20 man gangbang that is the steam chatroom and meet the rest of the active tf2 community.

While I don't agree it is a NECESSITY, it is incredibly useful. It's reliable, consistent, and convenient. There's no reason why we shouldn't have one. I mean, seriously, it's not like setting up an IRC is hard. Make a channel, make yourself Op. Get people on. Oshi- you have an IRC channel. Hell, I could make one now in 2 seconds if you want.

I don't see why we should have anything else.
We have a perfectly functioning chatroom on steam that works in game and intergrates nicely with steam itself.

To have an IRC that means we'd have two. You can't beat the convenience of the steamchatroom and so new people looking for help will go there.

Why would they want to download a irc program, register a name, go through all the hassles just to get a little bit of help?

Even if you intergrate it into the forum it will be subject to firefoxes whims.

The Steam chatroom works fine, I don't know why you'd want an irc or shoutbox, which by the way is the worst idea there.

Feel free to vote for IRC if you wish, but I'll be campaigning agaist it, and if it comes around I won't be using it. Too much bother when I can just use the simple chatroom we already have.
