I was just wondering if there was an IRC for this website/community, I just recently installed a client again and have been looking for some places to talk. Anyone know of some good ones?

I don't know of one for here, but I do know an IRC server that we could easily set up on, if wanted. I'm guessing most people are just going to tell you to get on the steam chat, though.

I'm guessing steam chat is prolly used the most, but I always forget to open it. I guess if enough people wanted it it could be implemented, but if there already isn't one for as long as this sites/community has been together I doubt there will ever be one.

This has been discussed many many times. In the end people wanted to keep the community together in one place. Since the steam chat had the majority of people, and was easier for the steam community to use than third party applications. It was decided TF2m wouldn't use IRC.

If it's so outdated why do so many people still use it?

Because some people, for some reason, still rome the internets sphincter? The last known remnents from the original third party networking app. The last Grogan that clings to the anal beard of the interwebs. Someone needs to take a wad of paper towels and rip the bugger out, flushing it down the toilet so that fresher ones may take its place.

Most people don't like change. IRC works, and that's enough for communities that grew whilst using it. TF2maps didn't, and doesn't require it.

Shoutboxes are a fantastic place to rub a turd over the rest of your website.

Computers sure have been around a long time, why do people use them still???

and no

Selentic's analogy is flawed, since computers are kept up to date. But yeah generally people tend to keep using old stuff if nothing really replaces is.

Aaaaand most shoutboxes might be a detriment to the website, if we implemented something like the system floor_master built for 2f2f's shoutbox it would really help the site with it's livestream integration, messages when people reply to threads, info on who is playing on our servers + click to join buttons. and most of all it isn't full of crap like steam's chat.

It would be a positive addition to the site, but I doubt FM would be really all that willing to share :(

Hmm, I use IRC everyday. It's a simple way to chat with people and with chat built into opera, I don't even need to install another program. I've yet to find an easier way to get a large group of people together to chat. The second best is most likely Skype, but my school blocks Skype from use, so that's a nogo.

I don't think it's a "people hate change," it's more of a "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

yea I have IRC built into trillian so I technically don't have to install a whole nother app in order to talk on it, just have all my messaging programs together in one area. Like TPG said, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt asking though for a shoutbox thingy or rss feed on the site for the most recently relied topics and or newest posts that updates in certain intervals.

irc owns. shoutbox has a youtube player and the ability to see who is on the main server (not rly too amazing)

i can set up a channel on gamesurge pretty easily but i doubt anyone will use it.

imo IRC is horrible and outdated.
This is not a valid argument when our current chat medium is steam, which has even fewer reliably functioning features than IRC.

If we were to do a chat room on site we should use a shoutbox. Far better and easily customizable.
The 2f2f shoutbox is decent, but it has no client-side chat logging and, more importantly, I have to restart it at least once every 12 hours or it stops responding and becomes impossible to use. It is NOT very conducive to long-term chatting.

I for one would be willing to give IRC another shot if there's enough current interest in it. The last time we tried (which was probably a year and a half ago) people just didn't show up.
