Crosscut (formerly known as pl_gorge)

crosscut_header.png
Description:
Gorge Crosscut is a single stage payload map set in the forest. The BLU team's goal is to blow up the only bridge over gorge, this will prevent RED trains to move over the gorge. BLU uses the train tracks to push the bomb onto the bridge and detonate it from there. To get to the gorge the BLU team will first need to pass a lake, a sawmill and an old mine.

Development:
I started this map a long time ago but had a break and started again this summer, I released my first beta July 2009. It is my first real map for Team Fortress 2 and I learned a lot from it. It was a big experiment on giving the player as much freedom as possible. Previous 4 beta versions were tested on a few communities and now the 5th beta is coming up I finally feel confident enough to post it here. :)
I will put up a download as soon as beta 5 is ready which should be soon now, I only need to fix some last things and I should come up with a new name...

About the name:
The map was first called pl_gorge but it was renamed to pl_crosscut after Valve released cp_gorge.

Thanks for the help and all feedback is welcome! :)

i've played this map a couple of times now, really looking forward to a new version which i believe is coming quite soon.
I think as the waterfall is quite important for the map, something with falls in it would be great, so i'll nudge pleasurefalls at you :)

I'm not sure, but I think there's a map already named gorge!

No it's not a Valve modification!
Valve stole my name instead
:glare:

So now I need your help to find a new name!

As much as pl_george is hilarious, I'd call it defile. Just stay away from "Falls" because that's not really original now. :p

Try to be a little more original with your name next time please. I mean, Gorge is a good map, but that doesn't mean you need to take its name.

I like the crisp look to the buildings, but I think having all the additional tracks can confuse players who are new to the map. The tracks are supposed to indicate where the payload should go, and therefore, where to set up defenses. I don't think the large "Gorge" signs fit in that well with the TF2 theme, and the cliffs look sharp in some areas. Nice bridge.

.

I have to say, i've been playing this map for a while now as codename was nice enough to let our community use it, and my first beta file is set as being created on the 21st of july, 2009, 5 or so months before the valve cp_gorge was even hinted to us.

looking at general waterfall and gorge articles on Wikipedia;

plungpool
overhang
shelter
block
cascade
cataract
fan
plunge
punchbowl
segment
tier
multistep
foss
tributary
swirlhole

Of course, you could always stick with "pl_falls" or "pl_waterfall", as that works fine.

Thanks everyone!
I wanted to reply earlier but then I kinda broke my pc

Anyways thanks a lot for the great list of names tinker :)

From the old list I also liked defile & debouch the most, but the new one also has some nice options.
George was also more of a joke since some people called it that :p

The rock texture indeed is a bit repetitive sometimes, I tried experimenting a bit with altered textures etc. but when you're in game it isn't that bad tough because the trees stand in your way ;)

Now about the tracks: during all the play tests I've seen very little people get lost.
I also designed the tracks in such a way that the payload can only go one way.
I made a nice overview of the map showing all the tracks:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3920996/pl_gorge/pl_gorge_b5_380002_railtracks.png

The only part that is a bit confusing is the screenshot on the left, the barricade there was first placed on the tracks but that made it a bit claustrophobic so I moved it. I also put dirt over the tracks showing that the cart can't go there. Finally those gates close after checkpoint 2/B has been reached so it shouldn't be confusing. I could however try to align that track to go the other way tough.
But we'll see once we playtest beta 5 :)

Thanks again for the feedback!

pl_cataract sounds kind of cool... although you may have to explain it to some people.
