The Great Class Dash

By Dylan 'Steaky' Loney

Hey Everyone!

I've finally released the first public version of my Team Fortress mod, and I would love it if you would give it a playthrough and let me know what you think.

The game is a platformer similar to the flash game Canabalt. The first level starts out with you controlling only the scout. The only control in this stage is jumping, and its relatively easy to clear all the obstacles and reach the end of the level.

Later levels introduce more classes though, and in the end, you will have to quickly switch between all nine to reach the finish.

For more information, please visit http://classdash.yolasite.com

I have done my best to try to get the game to run with as few problems as possible, but there are still some glitches in the game (the class selection can be especially tricky, and may glitch if you try to change classes too quickly). I appologize if this happens.

Special thanks to TF2Maps.net for their work on the Swamp pack.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback about the game.

Goddamn, this is awesome. Suddenly, I don't care about the new weapons anymore. Fantastic fuckin' job, man.

EDIT: Also, I noticed you made the Triboniophorus Tyrannus too, which came out on the same day this modification came out. Pretty awesome stuff man, I hope to see more creative work from you in the future.

Nice job, boyo. It's been fun working with you with this in the weeks before release.

Hopefully this won' totally overshadow my upcoming Scout Bros release.

I found the later levels really, really difficult. Having less than a second to react to 9 different situations with only one solution each, coupled with the correct timing for jumps made it more frustrating than challenging.

I wish I went far enough to fight the Swamp Monster, but alas, I got no further than the middle of the Volcano stage

Was this map just free time? Or was it a school project?

Hey everyone!

Thanks for the feedback, Im glad you like it!

To Exist : This was just a fun side-project, and not for school

And to Icarus : I'm sorry, after about 100 times playing the same level, it got pretty hard to know how hard the level was :D

Don't forget that you can press H, and it will show which key you have to press. Also you can load any of the maps to skip a level (the later levels are called cdash_2, c_dash_3 and c_dash_4.

And to Penguin, don't worry, yours will rock too :D

Anyways, thanks again everyone!

You should really offer a version with all the content embedded into the BSPs. Yeah there will be some duplication it looks like, but it's better than throwing files all over :/ (I'm actually not going to bother trying this until I feel like embedding it all myself or you do so, because I like to keep my directories clean)

A great idea, but unfortunately impossible. The game uses a number of files that will not work if packed into a bsp (such as the config files required to run the game). Since I couldn't pack everything, it made sense to leave most of the files unpacked (those which would have been duplicated) to keep the size down.

Is there much point to the class switching? It looks pretty gimmicky. The heavy runs through walls.. the scout double jumps, i imagine the pyro survives after burn damage on the volcano level. Is there much more to it?

Could you please add a easy mode were you can control your movement insted of just walking forward 24/7? 99% of my deaths were due to having 0 reaction time between switching classes. :S

You guys are lightweights.

This was fun, had some difficult moments due to me not seeing sentries, but otherwise was not too hard and was generally fun.

For the next version I'll try to think of a nice way to do this. In the mean-time, you can just type -forward in the console to stop running, and then bind a key to +forward

And don't forget H for hints :D

I enjoyed it. It was challenging, and frustrating at times, but I managed to beat it. My only complaints are that there's no music, and that the Falcon still controls shooting and mouselook. Well that, and there were sometimes problems with switching classes where I would go back to the previous checkpoint instead of just switching classes on the spot. Also, I ended up having to jump up, then switch classes to avoid getting caught under the ground.

Sorry, no proper review from me as this is gunna overwrite files I already have, which I am not willing to do.

Materials unpacked from the BSPs? Big disapproval here, also, if all your custom content is outside the BSPs where is the models folder??

I'd quite like to give this a try but I just can't.

Really fun stuff, reminded me most of a 9-button DDR at the end with beautiful detailing. Take that as you will, but I definitely enjoyed it.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to make such a thing multiplayer? Like, a server full of people racing towards the end of a map, or shooting each other in 2D?

Hi Wasted, thanks for the feedback! Yeah, when I was trying to figure out how to do controls, I didn't want to unbind all the keys, as I wanted to be as unobtrusive as possible, so I just rebound the keys I needed and turned the sensitivity way down so the mouse wouldn't mess up the camera. I guess the falcon uses different settings for that.

And to Tinker : I assume it would be possible, but probably not a good idea. Theres a ton of console commands and scripting, and I assume if you had multiple people it would get messes up somehow (plus you need sv_cheats on, which probably wouldn't be a good idea for multiplayer). Also, as far as I can imagine right now, theres no good way to control which way your player looks without messing up the camera horribly, which was the main reason I didn't include any shooting (except for strait ahead)

And to YM, I'm sorry about that. The only files its trying to override are from the swamp pack, so you can certainly just not overwrite those and it will work fine since you have it already. As I said before, most of the game essential files couldn't be packed into the bsp, so at that point I decided to keep most stuff unpacked to reduce the file size. Some stuff is packed in the bsps, such as models.

I'm really not sure why you keep talking about the game essential files like they are some big amount of things. The only unusual things I see is that you have configs, and five configs is much less messy that all the other stuff, even if only because they aren't something that is going to show up in Hammer if you don't delete them. However I don't really know why that won't work embedded, the ones named the same as the map should work, so maybe you only need one loose config and everything else could be embedded.

I played this and while I enjoyed it through to the end, the class switching seemed a bit 'programmed'. What I mean is that the game boiled down to 'switch this class here or you die' rather than mixing it up a bit. For example, it seemed a bit weird the way that you died if you hit a wall and weren't a heavy. Alternate routes would have been fun, and the classes should have allowed more creative play. A medic should reward bonus points for healing someone, not be an absolute necessity. Maybe the sniper could allow you to zoom the camera out and see further, and a soldier could allow you to reach higher places by replacing a jump with a rocket-jump. All I'm saying is that not every choice needs to be there and then life or death.
