I use all of them depending on what level of mapping im working on (eg detail, blocking, putting in rooms, tools etc).

I tend to try to start with 32 or 64, and then work my way down until I hit 2. That's when I realize I need to clean up my brushwork so I'm not working at a scale of 2.

I don't see why anyone would use anything else than 16 as standard, unless they're new to Hammer. It's pretty much the optimal size for almost everything except for details. There is usually no need to step down to the size 8 grid unless you're doing it to resize a doorway or make a wood wall or something.

That said, I learned from my newest map that basing your initial blocking more or less on the 128 helps towards making a good, simple structure.

16 or 8 for blocking out. i'm always scared that it won't match up perfectly, so I'm afraid to use smaller grids.

I change sizes depending on how zoomed out I am at the time. The ] and [ keys get a workout whenever I'm in Hammer.

fail poll is fail I use all of them up to 512 (YES 512 units grid)

just depends what for, larger than 64, I'm working on displacements, 16ish (often flits between 8 and 32 too) and I'm doing normal structural work

Then any fine details just reduce until needs are met.

I always use 8. I find its the easiest. 8 is the thickness of many door props and windows props. I often flick between 4 for adjusting things but I don't block out with it, and when positioning props I use Shift-W all the time.
I don't understand how people can use 16, its too big for me :p
