I want to make models for tf2, so what is a free program I can use? Or am I mistaken to think that xsi is not free?
Also, what page can I use for tutorials on that program?

theres gmax, which is a freeware version of 3ds max (older old version i believe)

Don't even bother with gmax, blender, and XSI are both easily a step up from it. I've hardly used both though, so I can't really say much else.

Blender is free and has .smd support, which is what you'll want. XSI also has a free mod tool that's available designed specifically for source games.
