Idle map restriction

Should idle maps be banned from tf2maps.net?

Lately there are more and more idle maps showing up. 90% of the time people are flaming the authors. Do we even need idle maps here? Isn't it enough with achievement_idle? :bored:
I think that there should be a new rule that idle maps cant be posted on this forum. Are you with me?

Well ok, i too do like inferno. I guess we shouldn't ban them, but i think we should do something about it. Take for example this map: link
All commenter are flaming.
We have to find a solution. Maybe.

If someone posts an idle_map, i think it's in the author's best interest to recieve the unanimous feedback from the community here that we don't need more idle maps, and that to make a fully fledged map is infinitely more productive and worth while. It's the only reasonable form of motivation we have beyond a sticky (that will never get read by 90% of the members).

The trouble is that the majority of responses to these threads are little more than "anti-idle" and leand themselves to bash the map/author, than providing any real "feedback" ("GTFO" is not feedback). Rather than suggesting alternative's to their current efforts and leaving them to waste their own time of their own accord. You can only make recommendations and you should not bother yourself with anything more. Stop whining in these threads and continue to make your own real maps that will blow this crap out of the water (/send it into the TF2m archives never to be seen again).

YM's said this too many times to count. We do not prosecute (/are not prejudiced towards) certain map types (orange, idle) but threads will get locked if forum members abuse the thread topic in a trolling manner.

I'm fine with idle maps, the map section is a showcase after all, to show off original map designs. I don't see how idle maps don't fall into that category.

People just flame idle maps because it goes against their ideas about what mapping really is. If you're going to restrict idle maps, you might as well restrict every map with HL2 textures, because nobody likes those maps either.

What feedback is there to give? They don't have any interest in gameplay, its just a map thrown together in 5 minutes. :\ If the map is of such high quality that the fact theres no point to the map doesn't matter, then sure why not? Most of the idle maps are just 3 rooms with a cap point in the middle. :\

My usual response is something along the lines of: "New idle maps are rather redundant in their function, your time would be better spent learning the software properly (if you have any intention in creating something playable). Otherwise it's a wonder why you came here, made an account, and uploaded an idle map, which you quite clearly realise is not a fully fledged map. Alternatively, since you took the time to set up a control point and functioning spawn rooms, there's nothing stopping you from taking a little extra time to add a few extra buildings and making an arena or koth map."

Atleast this way you've explained to them:

  • The vast majority of the TF2 community do not want additional idle maps.
  • Why the community does not want, nor need, additional idle maps.
  • Idle maps are not difficult and get no praise from the custom content scene.
  • That the TF2 community ultimately desires maps with gameplay and functioning game modes that enhance the game experience for all who've bothered to spend money purchasing this game.
  • Learning hammer is a time consuming process and something of a commitment.
  • Hammer is a powerful tool that can create infinitely more interesting scenarios/environments than idle maps, why don't you try your hand at something amazing.
  • Maps do generally take months to produce and they should be prepared for a long haul or try something else they can comfortably dedicate their time towards.

"We don't want idle maps here" Says nothing about the quality of their map, nor the state of the larger TF2 community, nor does it motivate them in to producing something worth while. They'll just go to places like FPSB. Which you might think "good riddence", but that doesn't help the quality of the TF2 custom content in the long run. They'll continue to poison the TF2 map databases with this trudge unless you explain to them the status-quo of TF2 and the custom content scene.

it's very insulting to see idle maps bumping good maps off the home page.
however, I don't think we should BAN them. maybe make a special section (sub forum) for idle/fun maps?

you see, I think banning idle maps might become a turnoff to new mapper. we need to accept them and show them the right way.

This was suggested in the past. Nineaxis shot it down as it would imply support in the creation of idle and orange maps. When we actively try and motivate individuals away from these kind of maps. We can't just brush it under the carpet.

I'd like to change my vote. I voted 'yes' before I read this thread, but I've been convinced otherwise after reading.

I think a subsection would be a better choice. When I think "idle" map I think a few rooms, some water, a CP and no real work -- I didn't realize inferno was an idle map either.

Perhaps the subsection can just be for all non-standard game modes. When I'm browsing for inspiration, it'd be nice if I could skip those. And when I'm pondering strange ideas, it'd be nice if I could find JUST those.

Definitely wouldn't call that a trash pile. Some of those alternate ideas are pretty awesome.

It's really quite hard to say... since idle maps such as Inferno are pretty damn well made, wile on the other hand, we have pre-FPSB quality idle maps that make me want to shoot myself...

I voted yes, but think that the already posted idle maps should stay.

ban

Additionally I'd like to see pictures being forced on thread creation.
