Bioshock & Bioshock 2: Major plot flaw

So I was looking at the "incinerate!" ad while playing bioshock 2 (epic) and it occurred to me; If there's absolutely no censoring in rapture whatsoever, and they have gene modification technology to the point where they can safely shoot fireballs out of their fingers and go invisible, why aren't there any "enhancement" ads around? Think about how many random viagra advertisement ads you get in your spambox, now imagine that they can freely change the human DNA.
I reckon there would be more "enhancement" ads than incinerate! ads around. A LOT more.

Yea, but think about it seriously. In terms of game design and narrative, that's not the point of Bioshock.

It's not a plot flaw, it's left out to focus the game direction, it's on purpose. Consider it a compromise. Sure, realisticly there might be these penis enlargement ads if there was no censorship. But the game needs to stick to certain "rules" in order to tell the story.

Just like there's audio diaries sitting in blocks of frozen ice. Sometimes things just don't make sense but we just don't care. Yay suspension of disbelief.

On another note, I think Numerous was joking.

Ding.
I didn't expect them to put it in, but I think if rapture was real then that's what would happen.
It's a joke, but <lol>thats what would probably happen</lol>.

And by the way, I see no real reason why the audio diaries couldn't have been fine after being in the ice. They could have been built to withstand temperatures like that, since rapture was under the sea and thus flooding with freezing water is always possible. That and random splicers using winter blast.

I wasn't really remarking on the audio diaries being in ice, just that they're sitting around at all.

If you were joking then why would you title your thread "Bioshock: Major Plot Flaw", and claim that you believe there should realisticly be "a lot more" of "these" ads.

I'm not gonna argue with you about it, you just don't execute your OP's very well, thus people don't know what your intentions are regarding the content of you OP's.

Plus you spam stuff all over the forums, about all sorts of crap.

If you think that was a joke........

.....get out some more.

But anyhow, bioshock was full of holes. mainly that the character did almost everything I wouldn't dream of doing if I was in his shoes. Like sticking every needle he finds into his arm. And the chosen method of story telling was terrible, being barked at by some irish guy on the radio all the time. real compelling. Felt like he was playing bioshock and I was just some sucker that had to sit there whilst he enjoyed himself and barked 'would you kindly' at me

Bioshock wasn't worth the £2.50 steam charged me for it and even if they gave me the sequel free I wouldn't play it.

anyhow /rant.

Bioshock had some serious continuity and plot issues. But compared to F.E.A.R. it was the shakespeare of games.

Name a nonlinear series that doesn't have lots of continuity errors, B:(TCH.

And YM, I've a few people saying that they'd rather play cp_hotellhell than play hoodoo. So I think you'll understand why some people's opinions I completely ignore due to lack of taste. ;)

Seriously though, when you think about human nature, what would you expect? People to go for burning stuff, or "enhancements" with nearly limitless possibilities?

Nearly limitless is right. As Steinman said, ADAM made it possible to change almost anything about their bodies. My mind inevitably wondered what would happen if there were furries in Rapture.

That awkwardness out of the way, it's not too surprising that there wasn't a big market for willy-nilly body-modding (no pun intended); as the Fresh Hair commerical pointed out, a lot of people probably didn't trust splicing, at least to any major degree. The big factor that got people to start splicing was the war, and needing to defend themselves against Atlas's splicer army.

And in Bioshock 2, there was the memories of all that nasty business that happened the first time around to keep them wary...

I recall an audio diary that touched indirectly on the subject, suggesting that using the plasmids someone could even go so far as change their gender. As has been touched on, there are obvious reasons more overt references to the sexual side of Rapture don't appear in the game.

I guess you completely and totally missed the gigantic super significant plot element that actually explained all of that and was an absolutely amazing piece of storytelling for an interactive game, utilizing the very nature of immersion to give the player as revelatory an experience as the main character.

So basically, everything you listed is what the game did right. For it to be any other way would have been ruinous.

You would have figured that once people spliced themself a fireball-throwing ability, the next things to follow would be ovious. To them, at least. How come they spliced all the "beauty" gene tonics but nothing else?

That was a relatively humorous statement that I enjoyed so much I burst out with histerics in a way that everyone in my immediate vicinity could hear my state of enjoyment.

You only played half-way through, didn't you?

Either that or you just ignored a lot of things. There's even an Accuvox thing in Bioshock 2, explaining that "some irish guy."

"Everytime Ryan turns up the heat, I know I'm a little bit closer to beatin' him at his own game. But now the game's changin' - Ryan's boys are comin' in heavy - lookin' to knock down my door and take what's mine. Like this is the first time I had to dodge a bullet. They're comin' to my house expectin' a show, but they're gonna get a disappearin' act. Say goodbye to Fontaine... and hello to Atlas."

because, back in the 50's and 60's that stuff was actually frowned upon. You don't realize how uncivilized today's world is.
