Detail Props and transferring paint alphas

Hey guys, so I was wondering how I can add those nice detail props to my grass textures, and I understand that it has to be specified in your map properties, which I've done, since it isn't working so far, I was wondering if I could either tell it which textures to put them on, because I used the wrong grass/blend texture, or to change my ground textures to the proper one. The only problem with this is that I've done alot of paint alpha work following the track in my map (its a payload). Can I change textures and somehow tell hammer to keep where the texture has been painted on the block? Or does this make no sense?

thanks

Alpha is kept as long as you don't destroy the displacement, so changing to another texture would retain it.

also, is there any way to make the detail props show up in-hammer?

Ya, under options>3d view - there should be a box to check to show details (or models, can't remember the exact name of the box).... I have my hammer set up to show the grass sprites n other detail from the alpha paint. Just be careful if your system isn't up to the task of rendering all that in your 3d view, it could slow the system down big time.

It does slow it down alot and sometimes if you change the texture from one with detail props the detail props can stay there.

Be sure to adjust your model fade distance, and even clipping fade distance (normal geometry), if it does lag your system. That should improve your performance whilst allowing you to retain the ability to see local details.

:detailsprites: toggles their display in Hammer.

It was already on for me, but it seems to not do anything!

also, I don't see a setting in 3d views to show these...I've got everything checked except for some boxes in the last area (don't think this one has to do with detail props)

I still don't see my grass! :(
