Two Questions, really...

So...I have two questions, really.

I'm considering a new mapping project, which will actually be my first real level design project to be taken even remotely seriously.

As for level editing experience, I have a decent amount of experience using the Source engine in general, but I'm not really too amazingly keen on the ins and outs of game balance as far as TF2 goes, and...well...basically, I just am not too sharp on
the "TF2-specific" things as far as level design goes.

So...my questions are:

1) For someone in my situation, which gametype would be good to start with, for a first project.

2) I was thinking eventually (depending on his this project goes), I wanted to do my own rendition of an Avanti (from TFC) type map, but I wasn't sure exactly how the entities would have to be set up, if it's even possible to do.

I just wanted to make sure that the flag-carrying to CP element remained in the map, but....yeah. I don't really know much regarding entity setups and....stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I find that the best way is to envision a map and it's layout and type as one and then start from there, I'm currently working on 2 maps, on the first I imagined how it would all be laid out and I find it incredibly easy to work on it, I have another which I didn't at all and I struggle to get much work done. This, however, is all personal.

Yeah, I have some software standing by (as well as graph paper and a pencil) to do a 2d layout with before I do any brushwork, etc.

I just was concerned with trying to determine what the easiest game mode is as far as having to worry about map flow, balance, etc.

I was thinking that the answer would be either Arena, KOTH, or standard CTF.

Start with something small, so like you said, Arena, KOTH or standard CTF. Right now might be a good time to start a CTF map, because there's a big great CTF contest going on. It'll make you able to get a little more feedback

It's possible to do a Avanti-ish map. Take a look at the previous major mapping contest. We've called it A/D CTF. HAARP and Vector are some good examples of great maps using that gamemode. I believe there's a prefab for the gamemode hidden on the forum somewhere

If you haven't already done so download this: http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=4674. It's a couple of great tools for TF2 mapping, they are really useful!

Yeah, I'm more than likely going to do...Arena or KOTH first, I just have to decide on a theme, really. I think I wanna do something alpine-ish with snow and the like. Maybe I could do something with this new Swamp thing that was released here.

Okay, so I took a look at the TF2 Swamp Theme, and it's something I have determined that I need to use.

I've decided to do a KOTH/Arena map using said theme.

Thanks for the input. As soon as I come up with a name, I'm going to be posting a layout or SOMETHING here, anyway.
