You're making things worse by objecting to references to a particular demographic. Especially so since you're not part of it yourself, because you're deciding for other people wether they feel offended.
The rule of thumb is, make it funny. When it's not funny, it comes off as hostile.

1) You are deciding for yourself if we are gay or not and you seem to think I can't be offended if I'm not the target of the "insult".
2) Most gay people are offended by this, don't try to argue otherwise.
3) We get it's a joke but it's very politically incorrect
