I think this thread is due for a fine combing, a couple of the links have become obsolete with new threads and Tutorials being produced (The Cubemaps one, for instance)

also broke, geocities is dead. use http://www.bagthorpe.org/bob/cofrdrbob/vmex.html instead.

Also what are the pros/cons to the Model / 3D Editors suggested? im new to mapping let alone modeling and havn't the foggyist which one would be the easist to try my hand at

I propose the adding of Twister to the tools, somewhere. Designed for generating complex displacement stuff, most usefully domes and curved/ramped floors.

EDIT: Eh, and while I'm at it, Propper. For people who just need to make simple custom models and are more comfortable doing so in Hammer.
