Oh goody, and here I was yesterday thinking that I should map something small, either koth or ctf. And on this second case I had an idea to create an interesting dynamic. Guess I'll try and do something worthwhile then. Although that dynamic kinda made use of an insta-kill pit... humm....

My clan may be able to provide private 6v6 testing, as well as SourceTV demos of any maps we test and extensive feedback from participants (from a competitive viewpoint), this is if they're at all interested.

---

Just for fun I could also open up my 32 slot server for some public testing of any entries you'll be getting!

[*] MAP WILL BE SCORED ON TOTAL FLAG CAPS PER TIME - NOT FIRST TO NUMBER OF CAPS. Remember this when designing your layouts. This is a design reminder. This functionality is handled server-side and is set up for competitive matches beforehand.

for anyone confused about what server commands are used in competitive gaming you can use ETF2L's (world's biggest TF2 League) config:

Note the third to last sentence about ctf-maps

There is one huge fundemental flaw in this contest, which is that competitive ctf, just isn't fun to play. Now you could argue that the whole point of the contest is to make it fun to play, but ultimately, the game will still consist of half an hour, on the same map, with no changing battleground, and probably with one player on the team forced to do the deathly dull job of engineering to stop backcaps.

That's my experience with competitive ctf - saying that, I've only played turbine competitively, and the setup seen in Atrophy may work. In the end though, it's just not as exciting as 5 CP. Turbine, I may point out, is utterly dull and unexciting

I'll be entering the contest, sure, but I don't give much of a chance to any of the maps being played with the same frequency as granlands. Why? Because CTF isn't very fun to play in 6v6.

[/opinion]

And to clarify, as I've played it, the timer is set to 30 minutes, with unlimited captures of the flag in that time. Whoever gets the most wins, if they get the same, it's a draw.

*opens archive of custom ctf gamemodes*

If I understand it correctly we can not make a map with teams switching sides.

But I thought gravelpit was also a comp map, so in theory it is possible to make a A/D ctf map that plays good for comp play. It limits the creative mind. (Wich forces it to be more creative, that is true)

another question: are multiple entries allowed, because I think I want to do a classic CTF map and a custom mode :).

These aren't enforced in the game, because it makes it difficult to change class if your medic lags out or something like that. But it is expected that every active and alive player you have conforms to those limits.

I'll get back to you on that with a definitive answer.

Your opinion is fundamentally flawed. You have no idea what crazy innovations will happen with this contest. And what's more is if you find CTF boring you should probably consider not entering, and doing a different gamemode, for the 'relief' in gamedays where everyone has ctf fatigue :p

TF2 needs a director AI, but then you'd say the maps are confusing, no?

I'm taking it upon myself to make an asymmetrical ctf map that works. Probably A/D with a twist.

^what randdalf said, to use the game built-in limits is a pain in the ass if your medic crashes and because of that no one is able to switch to medic until the crashed player is kicked

though there are limits: medic-limit 1, demo-limit 1, classlimit 2 and also FAN-limit 1

the config is from the official link

I mean it in the sense that the battleground doesn't change, your always going over the same middle area to the same bases. Like in 5 CP maps, you could be battling over 2nd point or last or mid, but they're all diverse and different.

In ctf you're fighting it out in the middle, the courtyard, or the intel room. It's the same thing.

Plus you're not limited to the 2 flag mode. There are a variaty of ctf mode's available to you. I am going for a nuetral flag in the centre>attack enemy base with it mode. IE Invasion. This way you don't split the tiny 6 team up, both teams have the same objective.

Why? Because you can't expect any map become the most popular. There's no reason to think any new map will be as popular as granary or badlands, CP or CTF alike. It will probably never happen. Though I'm positive this competition will produce a number of maps that's funnier than turbine and we will probably get a new ctf in the ETF2L map pool

Don't you play in two halves?

I mean in competitive play, it's a half hour, but you play in two fifteen minute halves. Not A/D.

If we include four Novint overlays and models in the play area, can we also include some in the spawns (like those consoles?)
