OK, guys, I recently finished my second map and tried to complie it. For some odd reason, I cannot, as in, it will get do the compile log and freeze up, by freeze up I mean, it'll; First, Hammer will say "(Not Responding)" then when I click on the compile log window it goes "(Not Responding)", then after a while, it'll go grey when you click it (The Default Crash Function for Vista). And then when I do it again, it does the same thing, and after the second time, it LAAAAAGS my computer terribly.

It was working fine before I made the intel room bigger.
I'll try deleting stuff.

(Oh and I tried reseting my configuration)

maybe you just have to wait a little longer.
from all my experiences in the past. hammer was hardly really crashing while compiling.
when you say you made something bigger, compile time gets longer. i'd just wait a bit more and i'm quite sure it will run through if you show some more patience.

maybe windows thinks its crashing, but it really isnt. id take acumen's advice and wait a little longer to see if the compile completes.

Yeah, it can take awhile. If there is another problem though, you can try disabling different vis groups. Like have just world geometry checked and compile to look for leaks, then turn on other stuff and compile again. I've had some errors that made compiling mess up and take quite a bit longer.

Yeah, my friend said just wait, but I just tried it, and I got A LOT farther than before, but it crashes at Portal Flow: 1..2...3 ---- ...9...

Does it really crash, or does windows say it doesnt respond?

If its the second, there is no problem, depending on the detail and size of your map, and your pc, a compile can take hours.

how long did you wait ?
i mean maximum 15-20 minutes, i guess. depending on your mapping habits that's like nothing at all. i remember taking stuff up to hours...
i'd say. let it work for 30-45 minutes and then come back.
it's a shitload of stuff that needs be be calculated, just give it a break, disable forums, browser windows, any other applications and let it just to its job.
i'm almost 100% sure that it's not really crashing. just don't get on its nerves with enabling and disabling the hammer application or switching other windows back and forth. start compile, grab drink/food/human being and relax :)

This used to happen to me. A lot. Check if you have an optimized skybox, which in short means that your skybox isn't some huge cube just placed around your map. If it is, put a ceiling about 2000 units up from the ground, and continue whatever landscape you have (that people cant get to) up to the skybox. I didn't give the best description, but check out some of the half-life 2 skyboxes for a good visual of this, or some tf2 maps, even though I doubt it would be so obvious as to what they are doing.

Well, its a -32 hollow skybox, but I don't understand wha- IT WORKED
HOLY SHIT
I deleted a HUGE wall, and waited for about 3 mins and it worked
Yay.

BTW, I have a 3gb RAM.

People are right, Windows most likely thinks it has crashed. When ever i compile a map, in task manager, it always says its 'Not Responding' even though its working its magic still.
So take the advice and just wait. If you do a fast compile, depending on how big your maps is and the speed of your machine, it could still take a while. 5 maybe even 10 - 20 minutes. So just leave it going while you eat or something then cheack it again.
