Hi, everyone!
My name's Peter, I'm an Aussie who has experience with Worldcraft. Anyone here remember that? It was back in Quake days. Long, long ago.
I used to make maps for the original Team Fortress, it was a riot - and a huge hobby of my friends and I back when we were in high school.
I haven't really mapped since, but hopping into Hammer (which is literally Worldcraft, renamed after Valve bought it because it was such an intuitive program), and the first thing I noticed was that it hasn't changed a bit. Nearly a decade later, I am using a program that is still familiar to me, rusty as I may be.
If I have any struggles with making maps, it will simply be getting my head around how things are done now (things have changed a lot since Quake), and making heads or tails of all the new entities that have magically appeared in TF2, of which there are apparently millions just to get a map working.

I came here because I found a couple of really useful threads on google and it seems to be a pretty friendly, dynamic community so here I go.

Sorry if I bored you to death!

Welcome to the forums Peter!

I myself was not particularly old enough to enjoy the QuakeWorld TF days at their height, but as an avid fan of id Software's older work, I have played it. I highly recommend giving CustomTF a try if you're every looking to jump back into some fast-paced semi-purist TF gameplay. It's basically the original but you are also able to modify your own class via a points system and utilize other neat addons such as tesla coils, special abilities, et cetera. Good fun if you're ever craving a different change of pace. ;)

Ahem...back on topic. I've been through Goldsrc and Source mapping alike (regrettably however, I've never pushed any substantial map releases) and I know TF2 mapping has some very different design principles and a generally different mindset from those of other games, even ones by Valve. This community is incredibly helpful, friendly, and you should find resources of every sort to help make the transition smoother.

If you ever need help, just ask around!

Well actually it wasn't renamed to Hammer until much later. They renamed it to Worldcraft from The Forge :p

Merhahahahahahaha! NETSCAPE!

Wow, jeez guys, response was overwhelming. I think this is the first "Welcome" thread I have made on a forum that's reached the second page. XD

If I don't post much over the next couple of weeks, believe me, it's because I am simply too busy reading up on all the threads here. This site is an absolute wealth of information, and it seems like every wayward question I have to ask, there is an in-depth tutorial on it here if I look hard enough.

Expect me to poke my head around the corner in a little while with an orange map. I am itching to get down to business with detail work, but for now I am just trying to make something balanced and fun for TF2.

A quick question, though. I absolutely love, love, love the aggressive Capture Point maps (my favourite map is Dustbowl), but they seem very complicated.
Would you guys suggest a particular gametype to start with? Like I dunno, capture the flag? Or do you think it would be worth delving head first into my preferred game mode?

Thankfully not as much as one might think. Unless you plan on doing some half-life 2 single player, then you're in for a ride.

Well if you are interested in the least work I would go with a King of The Hill(KoTH) map, or it's similar counterpart arena. You could also do a ctf map, but I think any single-stage map would be the easiest. Your best map will probably be the one you put the most effort into or the one you are most passionate about. It probably would help you to make some easy tf2 maps to get into the style, or just experiment around until you feel comfortable. If you are interested in the Dustbowl style maps then (A/D) then I suggest you check this out.

Just read through it, it's a godsend, thank you.

Well, based on what you've said I think the best course of action would be for me to 1> keep making some ultra-simple orange maps until I get my head around Hammer again (I'm getting there), 2> make a single stage A/D, then 3> a more complicated A/D with several points.

Thanks for your help.

I started hammer with hl2 and tried to make a few campaigns, then moved over to tf2 when I started playing it. I would try and make the most advanced thing you can as that is the only way to get better :)
Try drafting out some ideas for some A/D maps, and make them. The worst that could happen is that you'll get better and make another map.

wow, lol shows how good i read. Thanks for clearing that up.
I guess just seeing a word with a w and craft at the end makes me think wow.

Don't worry, when World of Warcraft came out my friend and I got it confused with Worldcraft all the time. XD

Well I seem to be doing that with my orange efforts anyway, so I think I will. Here goes, wish me luck!
