I demand a lot from you people, don't I? My dissertation covers the impact of video games on 'modern' society. I've sent out a couple questionnaire's. I'll thank you for taking the time to give your view on the interactive media that is video gaming. As it will help with my dissertation.

Do you enjoy playing video games?

What consoles have you owned, if any?

Approximately how many hours do you play video games, per week?

Do you have a criminal record?

Do you suffer from mental health issues?

What are your preferred genres?

Figure i might as well answer my own survey. May give you guys an idea for format as well.

1) Yes

2) ZX-Spectrum, PlayStation, Nintendo-64, PlayStation 2, Personal Computer (PC).

3) 6~8. Some weeks i don't play at all whilst others (summer holidays) i might end up playing up to 30 hours worth.

4) No

5) No

6) First Person Shooter (fps), Real Time Strategy (rts)

7) I play computer games when ever i have excess free time. Which is usually on Thursday evenings, and Saturday afternoon. When i was younger, in basic-compulsary education, i had a lot more free time in the evenings, and would arrange clan matches for my Day of Defeat clan. When i went to college, i stopped for other priorities.

8) I have once, for 4 months.

9) I pay for the internet connection which subsequently allows me to play video games online.

10) I'm not wholely concerned. Though obvious precuations should be taken to protect the young from graphic imagery.

11) ~25

12) ~40

13) Commercial sexually orientated games are something of a tasteless joke, it's hard to take them seriously. Any games that do take themselves seriously in this area are likely to be 'underground' distributions and presumably limited to sex stores.

14) I have owned 3 games that could be considered sexually explicit to under 18's.

15) ~5 games that might be considered sexually explicit to under 18's.

16) Drugs are a fairly common occurance in urban day living. Does this excuse the depiction and glorification of drugs? Not really. Besides, computer games generally depict drugs as 'bad'. A shameful habit that usually winds up getting the user or dealer dead. Hardly a promotion of drug culture. Depiction of drugs in video games is not a concern given apparopriate age restrictions that are in place, and social idealism of most main stream computer games.

17) 3

18) 7

19) I do. I believe on some level i have been mildly desensitised by an early introduction to violent content from game AND film publications.

20) Most countries control film and game content through the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). Certain country's circumvent this system through (what most people consider out dated) political legislation. I also agree that these policies are out dated.

21) No.

22) The most in depth to-date studies have shown that influence through visual media (film) is negligable. Each case of significant violent behaviour that has been indirectly linked to video games has been directly linked to mental health instability and even negligance of relavant medication. It is my belief that any violent media is capable of influencing mentally unstable individuals but that the average individual is capable of being consciously aware of "right" and "wrong" and distinguish the difference between reality and the simulated environments of computer games.

23) I believe video gameplayers *can* spend too much time playing video games. particularly mmorpg users who dedicate large amounts of their time to achieve insubstantial goals over inevitably long periods of time. I have seen mmorpg's turn A* students into college drop outs, but at the same time some of the most intelligent individuals maintain a moderation over their game time and come out ontop of their education. It varies with an individuals mentality, but understanding and education is the key to controlling any potentially damaging influences of something that might be considered as excessive as an addiction.

24) 10 hours +/-2 perhaps.

Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?
Not really. Sure, they create memes that my fellow gaming friends make fun of, and we talk about video games quite a bit, but it really hasn't made me a different person personality-wise.
Countries such as Australia and Germany have strict laws on the depiction of violence and sex in video games, many games are banned and re-released as censored versions. Left4Dead2, a post apocalyptic zombie shooter was released in late 2009 by Valve Software and features violent melee combat, limb dismemberment and excessive gore, but has been released without blood and dismemberment to Australia and Germany. What are your opinions on this level of computer game censorship?
It's going after the wrong thing. People who are disturbed enough to cause harm to people do it in spite of, not because of, video games. The majority of violent situations in video games are to prevent "bad guys" from doing wrongdoing, and see deadly force as something needed to stop innocent people from suffering. Even in games that allow/encourage killing civilians, it's usually this way due to the use of dark humor (making light of serious subjects) or to send a message about the horror of such an act.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
Yes and no. Video games don't influence people to mimic them, but people have their habits changed depending on how much they play video games, if they become part of an on/offline community, if they mod said games, etc.
What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
As long as it doesn't prevent them from functioning normally (ex: they still eat, take care of dependents, go to work, generally take care of themselves), it's harmless.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
As stated above, people spend too much time playing computer games when it prevents them from functioning normally.
What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
It's unique to each person. Some people have only an hour or two to play video games, some people have plenty of time. It's all based on one's living situation and their free time in general. It only becomes unreasonable when they play games when they need to be doing something more important, such as doing homework or being at their job.

Hopefully I answered them all right.

uhh...really couldn't say, everything i could possibly attribute to gaming can also be tied to many injuries

Censorship is really really lame, no collective should ever decide what is appropriate to the individual, their M rated games for a reason, and an adult should be able to make intelligent decisions.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
everything is an influence

What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
no real opinion, what you do defines who you are

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Oh there definitely are individuals that spend too much time playing games. There is no denying that, people need to find the line where the game stops being fun and becomes something they have to do.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
As much time as it requires of my free time, when squeezed in with homework and other projects. I will not define a number.

Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for your games?
Used to play WoW but that shit got old fast.
Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for online play capabilities?
Used to, for Runescape, when I was like 16.
Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a violent nature?
Yeah right. Not really, that's like saying TV or movies influence you in violent ways, it isn't true, it's more of the other way around.
How many video games have you owned that contain scenes of a violent nature?
I'd say every video game in the world has some sort of violence in it. But I have owned countless M rated games so yeah...
How many video games have you played that contain scenes of a violent nature?
Read above answer. Bout the same.
Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a sexual nature?
Not really.
How many video games have you owned that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
Two or three? Never really got into the whole videogame porn crap.

3 or 4? I know there were a few others that I've played that I never owned (God of War for example.)
Are you concerned about the influence of computer games that imply the presence of drugs?
Nah. Drugs are IRL, so why not in video games?
How many video games have you owned that imply the use of drugs?
A few. (Fallout 3, Bioshock and the like)
How many video games have you played that imply the use of drugs?
A couple more.
Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?
Slightly, but only by influencing the type of people I hang out with.

What are your opinions on this level of computer game censorship?

Was that a question?
I find the whole censorship thing in other countries totally absurd. They need an AO (Adults Only) rating so that games can get released without being censored, but be limited to only adults. Adding censors to your games only leads to people getting them in other ways (IE: Importing, gifting etc.)

Do you believe video games influence their players?
Somewhat.
What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
Not too concerned about it.
Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Some may, but it's their life.
What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
Allocations are boring.

Do you enjoy playing video games?
Yes.

What consoles have you owned, if any?
I have owned Nintendo 64, GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Advance SP, DS, DS Lite, GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Currently I don't own GBA, GBA SP, Xbox 360 or PSP.

Approximately how many hours do you play video games, per week?
15-20.

Do you have a criminal record?
No.

Do you suffer from mental health issues?
No.
(This is bordering on being too personal for me to answer, but oh well...)

What are your preferred genres?
Platformer
First Person Shooter

Do you arange times in advance to play any of your computer games?
I keep a mental plan of my weekend and days, so in a way I do. However, when it comes to games, it's usually something like "I'll have time to play this and this between school and homework", not something I follow strictly.

Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for your games?
Yes.

Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for online play capabilities?
Yes. (Same game as previous question)

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a violent nature?
Not much, I'm more concerned about video games being lazily labeled as a major factor in many cases of real-life violence. That's not to say I don't think they cause any violence, but it's hardly a big deal.

How many video games have you owned that contain scenes of a violent nature?
I'm not sure where the border between violent and non-violent goes in this case, but around 20 sounds about right...

How many video games have you played that contain scenes of a violent nature?
Pretty much the same games as in the last question.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a sexual nature?
No.

How many video games have you owned that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
Well... There's Mass Effect. If that counts, there's one.

How many video games have you played that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
Same game.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games that imply the presence of drugs?
A little, at least if the game is positive towards use of drugs.

How many video games have you owned that imply the use of drugs?
Considering subtle implications ("healing syringes") I'd say 10.

How many video games have you played that imply the use of drugs?
10-15.

Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?
Yes, they have. They've inspired me to pursue a career in video game design, and wherever I end up - even if I become a biologist instead - video games will always be something I enjoy more than any other form of entertainment.

I'm generally opposed to censorship, restriction is always a better option. In the case of Australia, they don't have an 18+ rating or something similar, forcing Valve to adapt the game to younger gamers (15+). A much better option would be to give it an 18+ rating, if that was possible. Since Germany has an 18+ rating, I just think they're too strict overall, something they're well known for when it comes to games. I don't think that is necessary.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
Yes, they can inspire and influence emotions.

What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
The fact that deep immersion in a game can influence your emotions etc. is only a good thing in my opinion. Of course it makes for great entertainment. However, it's also scary to think that they can also influence unstable minds, leading to various sorts of unacceptable behavior.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Some people clearly do. When video games are the only thing that matters to certain people, they have gone too far.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
That's up to everyone to consider themselves, my only rule is not to play games when I really should do something more important.

Video games are not the problem, critical thinking skills are the problem. Without the ability to think critically, it doesn't matter what the influence is

Too many to list. it also depends on your definition of violent (does Lego Star Wars really count as violence?)
How many video games have you played that contain scenes of a violent nature?
Substantially more than I own
Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a sexual nature?
not really. In some, it's probably better than the real life equivalent. Also: if movies can do it, Video games should be able to as well. Also, see the violence one - Critical thinking and the ability to discern fantasy from reality is what's really needed.
How many video games have you owned that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
Some may have been risque, but I don't believe I actually own any explicitly sexual games
How many video games have you played that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
See above.
Are you concerned about the influence of computer games that imply the presence of drugs?
No. Generally what drugs in computer games do and what drugs in real life do is very different. Also, see the violence one .
How many video games have you owned that imply the use of drugs?
That would be most of the RPGs I've played, do health potions count as drugs? Because that would be almost every game I own. Except Half Life I think. Even Unreal Tournament had "geneboosted" competitors, basically: They're quite ubiquitous. Oh, not to mention the number of things with cigarettes in them.
How many video games have you played that imply the use of drugs?
considerably more than the above.
Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?
Yes, mainly creatively. For example mapping, programming and 3D modelling are things I would never have done otherwise. They're a chief contributer to my love of media etc. I can't honestly say any other effects - I've been playing them so long I'm not sure I can distinguish correlation from causation in most cases. They certainly aren't the only thing that have developed my personality either so it's rather a vague area

If movies can show gore, games should be able to. It's frankly insulting the way it was handled towards not only parents but childless adults. Not only that but if video games are to thrive as an art form, we can't have this kind of censorship at all. There's certain things I'm sure a lot of people don't want to see, but that should be their choice. In cinema I can understand certain things being censored - it's different if it actually happens to real life people, but games that exist in a considerably less realistic world can be judged more liberally than that.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
yes
What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
Said influences are equal if not greater than any piece of art. However they are not exclusively negative. A vista in a game can inspire awe, a complex plot can inspire thought, a game with a well executed message can cause the player to think about theirself. Scenes like the airport one in COD:MW2 can evoke a real emotional response from the player like no movie can because the player is part of the scene. That is not to say players will immediately begin gunning down civilians, but it'll challenge their preconcieved notions. In short I think the influence is generally an emotional or intellectual one as opposed to a behavioural one. Though Prince of Persia certainly inspired some of my gymnastics repertoire.
Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Some individuals do, some don't. WoW players in general do.
What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
It varies per person, per game, per console. It depends on a lot of things including lifestyle, frequency of rests etc.

Most likely not, but it's possible.

I don't approve of this. Games like this are given age restrictions to protect the underaged, there should be no need to censor them.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
No

What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
Well for example, I don't think playing violent games can make the player violent, as everybody knows the consequences of violence. Except for young children, but that's why they aren't allowed to play violent games.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Yes, but then again, one can spend too much time on pretty much anything.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
Depends on the person and the amount of free time they have. I don't think there should be any kind of a limit.

If you don't feel like answering a question you don't have to. A couple people i've interviewed IRL prefered not to state whether they have a criminal record or not. I mean one could easily presume that means they do, but in terms of applying data to my debate i cannot. Which i suppose is ironic to a certain extent because it doesn't help me formulate an accurate discussion. Never mind though, i realise one or two questions are quite personal, but mostly neccassery for my dissertation. As i said, you're not at any obligation to answer any questions you are uncomfortable with.

If you can't remember how many games you've played of X nature or what ever, you can just put 10-20, 30+ or ~20 or something. Just estimate for me. I don't necasserily require total accuracy in these regards as they'll only get averaged in the end anyway. But it's important i get a decent pool of answers. Feel free to edit your posts if you remember stuff, i wont be recording this data until 20th December 2009.

maybe asking for an age would also be a useful question, given that you ask about 18+ games.

Perhaps, but this is not a focus of my dissertation. I already have significant data regarding -17's obtaining and playing violent video games, that allows me to discuss any potentially related topic regarding youth and gaming.

However, age is not a significant variable in regards to the questionnaire's purpose. Which is to formulate a window into the game player's priorities (which includes all ages). The questionnaire can allow me to make statements on whether, and to what degree, games have potentially warped the mentality of individuals; and whether this influence has been positive or negative. The questions are open ended so if an individual feels the need to supply additional information they may. One of the benefits of not handing out printed sheets of limited space :p

Effects on the youth have already been covered by several sources.

The questionnaire is only a part of a whole of my discussion where i require tertiary data to fill a void in a lack of certifiable sources. Particularly regarding that of video game violence. The important thing for me here is to gather opinions on the subject to form a social context and a few statistical pieces of data to contextualise supposed links between aggression and videogames; to be used in combination with other sources.

If it helps you understand any more, my dissertation "question" i was asked to ask, to formulate a focus of my discussion, was: Do alternate virtual realities pose a threat to modern society?

Which as you can probably figure out, encompasses more than simply age restricted games.

edit: Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, if you havn't recieved a thanks yet it's simply because i havn't got around to reading your reply yet. I will get there in due time.

Probably, I learnt English through them and fast reaction, and made quite a few friends playing them together :)

It's dumb. It shouldn't be censored, but instead video games should be handled like movies - if it's adult, only adults can buy them.
Do you believe video games influence their players?
Yes, probably a little.
What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
We've all seen people raging at their screen when something goes wrong, or cheering when they've done something awesome. I do not think any of these emotions carry to the world that's not inside the screen, though.

Yes.

Do you enjoy playing video games?
Yes.

What consoles have you owned, if any?
Sega Master System II, Playstation 1, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and DS Lite, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360.
Approximately how many hours do you play video games, per week?
I use my computer for about 25 hours per week. Of that, I'd say about 10 of those are spent playing games.

Do you have a criminal record?
No.

Do you suffer from mental health issues?
No.

What are your preferred genres?
FPS: TF2, CoD
Racing/simulation: Forza motorsport 2/3
Flight simulation: Microsoft Flight Simulator X
RTS: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War
Fighting/beat 'em up: Street Fighter IV, Soul calibur IV

Do you arange times in advance to play any of your computer games?
No, but school usually restricts me to after 3/4pm on weekdays.

Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for your games?
Used to pay World of Warcraft subscription.

Do you pay or have you paid any monthly subscriptions for online play capabilities?
Xbox Live.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a violent nature?
No.

How many video games have you owned that contain scenes of a violent nature?
Most of the games I own are rated at least 15/16+, so I would say 40+ games.

How many video games have you played that contain scenes of a violent nature?
40+ again, I rarely play a game that I don't actually own/borrow friends' games.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games of a sexual nature?
No.

How many video games have you owned that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
1 - Mass Effect.

How many video games have you played that have contained scenes of a sexual nature (explicit to -18's)?
None that I don't own.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games that imply the presence of drugs?
No.

How many video games have you owned that imply the use of drugs?
A few, Fallout 3 and Bioshock are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, although they only contained fictional drugs.
How many video games have you played that imply the use of drugs?
GTA games which I don't own.

Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?

I don't think games have influenced my personality as much as the people I associate myself with.

I'm not opposed to censorship for whatever reason, but, in a media intended for entertainment such as video games, a choice should always be given as to whether they want a censored version or not.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
I don't think that video games influence their players any more than sports such as boxing or rugby, in terms of violent influences.

What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
As far as I'm concerened, if a video game makes me feel emotions, then it's a good video game. If someone can't distinguish those emotions in a video game from real life, then they shouldn't be playing games.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Yes.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
I think that as soon as video games get in the way of real life events, then too much time has been spent playing them.

Pretty much just FPS, to appeal to me outside of this the game has to have some large innovation factor.

Too many to count. (easily 30+)

More than the previous, probably 40+

Blocky boobs? lol, no.

None.

Are you concerned about the influence of computer games that imply the presence of drugs?
No

How many video games have you owned that imply the use of drugs?
~5-10 (taking L4D's pills/adrenaline and games like bioshock's plasmids as clear drugs references)

How many video games have you played that imply the use of drugs?
Same as above plus a few.

Do you believe video games have influenced the development of your personality, and if so, how?
Yes, a fair bit I'd say. They've developed my imagination and creativity, from imagining what amazing worlds might be hidden in the bookshelves of Myst to imagining fighting along side aztec warriors in age of empires. As well as being a window into a wider world, just like films, you can get cultural references you wouldn't otherwise be subjected to.

Censorship is ridiculously over the top in almost all cases it's applied. If anything it will encourage to fight against the dominant power to let them do what they want instead of fighting towards common goals that would really benefit.

Do you believe video games influence their players?
Yes, just as films are designed to and suceed in influencing moviegoers games have exactly the same kind of effect.

What are your beliefs regarding such influences?
The nature of the influence may well be subtle and unexpected and certainly shouldn't be instantly labled negative in the way it is so often. Playing games as a kid really kickstarted my interests in particular areas featured in the games. The violence wasn't a factor for me since I knew if I acted like that in real life I'd just get beaten up.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
With any activity there are always people that spend too much time doing it. I imagine most people find a good balance that works for them.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
<25 hours per week.

They're addictive. Crime rates have been reduced as video game sales have gone up, making an incredible drop at the release of Modern Warfare 2. The only logical explanation is that delinquents decided to pick up a copy and kill a few ruskies.

Do you believe individuals spend too much time playing computer games?
Yes.

What would you consider a reasonable time allocation to video game entertainment?
I can't give one. There's no reasonable time allocation to most other forms of media. If I stare at a painting for four hours, I'm not unreasonable, just very interested in that painting.
