Since chrono was expresing frustration over being unable to get displacements to look like they do in badlands

like this:

I loaded up my stream and started from scratch to make the same thing. The video is 30 mins long but the final 10 is me being anal about presentation, you don't have to watch it, the bulk of it is 2-18 mins.

So I went from this:

to this:
to%20this.JPG

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

Breif rundown:
  1. Create some perpendicular displacements that sew neatly, all in a straight line - important for texturing!
  2. select top faces and dome them along their length
  3. deselect top and select 'front' and push them out into a wedge shape
  4. you should now have a split between the two, select both and sew, this should smooth out the corner.
  5. using alt+rightclick you can change the displacement brush axis to the normal of the face you click on, use this on the corner and push it out so its nice and smooth
  6. Dont forget that you can qickly scale the brush using atl+drag
  7. keep smoothing out the whole thing until you have a nice arc shape across the entire length
  8. make sure it is longer than the area you want to wrap it around
  9. use alt+click on a face that is at 45 degrees to the current displacement length (my little rotated block)
  10. push the corners in and drag the middle out
  11. continue until satisfied with the shape.

Remember kids: the shift+drag method for displacements is for sissies. real men use face normals.

Real men use vertex editing only!

Nah man, Spheres and Carve all the way. Thanks Youme. Great Video to watch and process subconsiously, you can learn so much from watching other, experienced mappers, doing shiz and nit.

The great thing about this method is its so much faster to create a tutorial, no worryign about screenshots or anything. it can also be done live and i can plug my mic in and narrate what I'm doing :D

I may even take requests ;)

When I alt-rightclick with the displacement nothing happens when I click. What am I doing wrong?

Is it possible to upload to youtube? Because I can't watch the vid.

In both short and long: no. Its half an hour of footage. I'd have to re-record it with a strict timeline if i were to up it to youtube. I'd also have to get some kind of video editing stuff and add sound etc. its just not something i can do.

I'm a beginner to displacement maps and I was completely lost. Does anyone know of a more basic tutorial?

-Edit- Never mind, I saw your much more user-friendly displacement map tutorial after a browse.
