Now that Thanksgiving is around the corner (at least for us Americans), I decided I wanted to ask you guys how often you use the "Thanks" option on this forum. Do you only use it sparingly, do you do it with almost every post, or even not at all?

Personally, I tend to use it quite a lot for things that are even remotely helpful.

I was going to thank every post I see on Thanksgiving, but very rarely otherwise.

If I learned something that I needed to know from the post.

To show appriciation for something (like a custom model).

If the poster already said what I was going to say.

Helpful feedback.

I give thanks to everyone who helps me. To everyone who can make me laugh :)
If its a helpful post, go ahead, say thanks ;)

Anything that literally makes me laugh out loud.

Or anything that teaches me something new. Although admittedly this is not that often.. as i'm pretty experienced with Hammer, and if something does go wrong, i can solve it of my own accord.

When feedback is given to my map.

To be honest, I really dislike "Thanks" or "Reputation" systems on forums.

After a while people come expect these trivial things for any sort of input they provide. Rather than seeing their input put to good use, they get offended cause their forum score didn't increase.

The score mean nothing in the end, and it does nothing but condition a community wrong.

Reputation doesn't serve much purpose if there's no negative reputation, and when it's there it's only good for chasing off absolute idiots.

The thanks system on the other hand doesn't really serve as much of a purpose, there's no way to really deem whether someone's posts are generally good or generally bad without the negative.

So really it's a choice between one that causes boatloads of drama, and one that doesn't really serve a purpose.

Though to answer the topic question, I only really hand it out if someone was helpful, not so much if they say something funny, of course there are exceptions to that.

When somebody helps me, makes me laugh, or gives feedback in a map thread I made.

I use it whenever I would have normally stopped and quoted them saying something along the lines of "Thank you" or "I didn't know that."

So yeah, I thank more people than those who thank me, but it's no biggy because there's a lot that this forum gives to me that I'd like to thank those people for. :D
