Remaking valve maps

Let's take a map like 2Fort.

Let's retexture and rearrange it so it looks like Viaduct's winter theme with TFC's layout.

A worthwhile effort, you think?

If you mean like re-making it from scratch and not re-compiling it, it's a nice idea.

I don't see an issue with that. Don't get me wrong, I dislike Valve Map Modifications as much as the next guy... but restarting from scratch and making a map that is, "in spirit", like 2fort or dustbowl or well or whatnot actually seems to be a decent Idea. Hell, I'd be a lie to say that any custom TF2 map made is completely original.

Not in this game, if you want to remake 2fort (From Scratch) in Crysis, UT, Halo, etc, then it might be a worthwhile effort, but no one really has a thing for reskins in TF2.

It would, of course, depend entirely on the map. If it's a map someone has built from scratch, using their ideas, then yes, it's as original as a community map for a developer's game can be. I think that's the context we're talking about here.

Well, it sounds like you'd be changing the map quite a bit, but be warned that no-one will be eager to download a 40mb ctf_2fort_classic_snow

Umm, you really should make your own map. Almost 90% of mappers hate remade tf2 maps :thumbdown:

Yeah, the real travesty is that ctf_2fort_revamp is so far down the list :p (And ctf_2fort_classic_v1 doesn't seem to be based on the SDK copy.)

I'm one of those folks who started mapping based on the sdk_* maps. And frankly, I'd do it again, and I plan to continue my ongoing map in addition to the my new one.

For me, it's a practice in map revision. With a map people already have a lot of strong pro/con opinions about, can I accurately diagnose the problems and work in solutions that don't involve moving huge tracts of geometry?

That said, if you want to change the overall map geometry to match TFCs, my suggestion is to start from scratch: Stock 2fort has so many brushes you'll have to move...

What exactly would be the benefit? You would go through the effort of making an entire map, only for it to play exactly the same as a long list of pre-existing ones.

That map was original.

That's not hating, it was a joke. That map wasn't supposed to be serious. It was an honourable mention.
