I'm making a string of christmas lights by making a rope, and I want to add small green and red lights to the string so that they just have a small sparkle, and light up the room a little bit. they're not really for lighting, just looks. What would be the best light entity for this?

I'd go with a light and a glow sprite. I know there are decent glow sprites in most cs maps if you wanted to just cut n paste - changing their colours of course.

env_sprite could work, you just got to make sure you have the right sprite associated with it.

light should be okay just wont be as shiny I guess you would say.

personally I wouldn't use a bunch of different colored lights next to eachother. just use 2 or 3 actual light sources and then colored sprites for the effect of many more lights (let's say 4 sprites for every light)

what you want isn't a disco, but happy colors. So sprites should be enough!

If you're looking for small, specifically-colored lights, you might also experiment with env_lightglow, especially since most Christmas lights that I've seen have been oblong.

maybe i'm just doing the env_sprite wrong then. mine just looked like a small black square with a picture of a light on it (just like what it looks like in the SDK)

Set it to World Space Glow, and the colour selected will glow in-game.

Change the scale to make it bigger/smaller etc.

Download the light prefab pack it has quite a few sprites in it that you can customize. (think thats the right one)

okay, those env_sprites worked absolutely great. thanks!. I don't want to start a thread for every problem with this map, so ill just ask agian here. when i try to use the tf2 bday models (the presents) im given this error while compiling.

VBSP: Error loading studio model "models/effects/bday_gib01.mdl"!

thats odd considering they're stock TF2 models. any suggestions?

I got the xmas lights working perfect, i simply used a few connected keyframe_rope's together with some slack using the metal cable texture for it, then added env_sprite's to it with world glow and different colors staggered along the rope. it looks really legit =) ill get a screen shot up of it 2moro if i can. now i cant get the tf2 bday models to work tho, i need help with that

ive tried many skyboxes, this looks best. and its hard to tell, but it is snowing =) i tried using the particle effect from viaduct but it doesn't work right in larger and higher open areas as well, so im just using precip snowfall.
