This may sound stupid to many of you, but I really would love to know how to do water properly. I've been looking all over for a good water tutorial that isn't telling me how to just place basic water. I honestly can't find one. I'm looking for something that is for medium to advanced water placement..

So, TF2M... can you teach me the ways? or at least link to something I've missed?

thanks

What is it you're looking for? what is there to adding water other than:

-One level of expensive water per PVS
-Try not to put props half in/out of water if you dont have to
-use as little as possible

I've had trouble making my water actually see through, so that it looks semi-realistic, as well as so that I can have something like a shore, where it gets deeper as you go in, on some kind of ramp..

The water is still contained in a box, but you add the ramps or displacement in...

Oh so you want an actual water material tutorial?? well no wonder you're having trouble finding one, as far as i know there aren't any!!

Basicly, find the texture thats closest to what you want already, extract the vmt and rename it. now you have your own water texture to play with.
Just open it up, change the fog distances, tint, LOD settings as you please and try them out ingame to see which works best!

(build a map, compile, build cubemap, look at water, change vmt, save vmt, use mat_reloadallmaterials 1, look at water again, rince, repeat) (saves compiling lots)

so it's okay to have the ramps inside of the water block?

Just make the ramp func_detail or something?

Shouldn't make a difference anyway I don't think, but eh.
