This is my first map, a space-themed, gravelpit-style control point map. Seeing as it's my first map, I REALLY want some feedback on it! Thanks to Odd!x for the moral support!

This map really feels like it's coming together! Beta soon? Perhaps!

No pix no clix, that's the way this game works. Upload some screenshots and we'll see about feedback!

I tried posting screenshots, but they don't appear to have worked... I'll try again.

Yeah, I'm so sorry about the textures! I just can't find a good spacey texture, so I'll fix it as soon as possible.

It is an Alpha 1 release. I think it's safe to assume he'll handle at least some of those issues later on.

Uh... no.

Oh really? Where is your first map then? I'd like to play it. It must be very good.

Okay, time for a useful comment...

For the texturing; can I suggest using the developer textures then, instead of the hl2-ones, and then you can search for some better ones? You can, if you don't want to use the devtextures, search for TF2 textures by setting the keyword to tf
For the lighting; spread some light entities throughout the whole map, it'll look way better.
For the hollowed sphere; make sure you func_detail that baby.

Yeah that brushworks is not really a good idea, if you want to make such complex stuff you should make a model.
But in overal it isn't a bad first map, you got the outlining of the map, and a theme.
Some points that you have to work on:
  • Scale of you areas
  • Brush work/ hollow sphere and ramps are to big and a bit of a mess.
  • Lighting (this is the easy one ;) )
  • Texturing ( you could try to keep the current hl2 textures and make some tf2 stylisch stuff for it later on.)
I still think you should release your first map, only if it is for the feedback you get from it. But you also should take the feedback serious and start reading some stuff about mapping.

I think the name Lunar might be taken...

Otherwise, yeah - the feedback so far covers most everything I'd say - get those HL2 textures out of there ASAP!

No we don't. "My first map" isn't an excuse.

So the fact that I've never been on this forum, and have never made a map before automatically means that I have to know every little thing about map-making?
I'm here trying to learn and so far all I've gotten from you is negativity. If you actually have any suggestions for how to fix the map, I'd gladly accept them, but so far I haven't gotten any useful information from your posts, other than the Ten Commandments of Mapping.

Everyone else here has been useful with their posts. And I thank you all for that.

Alright, just as an FYI, NEVER HOLLOW ANYTHING! VVIS will thank you for it.

Secondly, I highly suggest you read up on func_detail entities: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Func_detail. Again, will help a lot.

Personally, from the screens, the layout looks quite interesting; I like gameplay that uses quite a bit of vertical spaces. We'll see as time goes on.

Can I hollow rectangular blocks? All it really does in that case is make the four walls, roof, and floor...

Unless your map has descended from the heavens and is a pretty damn incredible first map, don't release it.

I'm going to go with Scorpion here. It's rare to see a "first new map" WITHOUT a description that reads: "hi im new hear tihs is my map plz downlaod and love it". My first map looked oddly similar to this.

To Scorpion: When I was first learning, I spent a lot of time reading the Valve Developer Community Wiki. It helped tons :)

What? I didn't understand this sentence. By "release" do you mean post it to this board? Because, if you do, how am I supposed to get feedback on it?
