I think life is about living. Really, beyond that people can do what they want. Now, my life is about enjoying myself and doing something nice for/with other people until I die. I would probably not say that anyone has on purpose "missed" their chance of living a good life.

The real reason for life is to replicate RNA cells...

Although I like to think there's more to it than that :) (but nothing goofy or fantastical mind)

Sefl replication or just replication?

(ie, would you consider a virus, which gets something else to replicate it for it, alive)

Spoiler:
Viruses are deemed to be alive

in a normal context: nothing

when speaking with an intelligent person or whilst being drunk:
-Why is this question so important?
It isn't important at all, but it is an interresting subject.
-Is there an awnser to this question?
If there was, then life was creater with a reason, thus a creator (a god) exists, I don't believe in gods (other subject), thus life has no creator, thus life has no purpose.
-If we found an awnser, how could we be sure that it is the correct awnser.
see the second question, it is very difficult.
-Does the person next to you really exist?
Just kidding, this is a nice subject for when you are drunk. (the awnser is yes)

I thought viruses arent alive, but then are you referring ot virions or viruses in their distinct categories?

Doing the hokey pokey, that's what it's all about.

The definition of "alive" is very tricky since at once extreme you could classify any self-replicating pattern as alive. If you have supercooled water, and you drop in an impurity that allows it to crystallize, is it "alive"? You have a pattern and a system that exploits an energy gradient to expand itself, after all.

This is analogous to prion infections, which are also a sort of catalytic effect.

Slightly closer to molecular biology, you've got transposons and mitochondria to mix things up.

The problem with the "reproduces itself" vs "virus" definition is that pretty much everything conventional wisdom tells us is alive also requires building blocks and other entities to do so. Just because some variety of flowers might rely exclusively on honeybees to pass genetic material to one another doesn't put them into the "un-life because it can't reproduce on it's own" definition for viruses.

On the macro end of the scale, there is an interesting premise found in some sci-fi books: What if the physical laws and constants of the universe are actually heriditary information, rules for operation, which are seeded from a parent universe? (This is either through multiple-worlds division or black-hole budding.)
