Battlement != battle ground, battle zone, fighting goes there

The common TF2 player assumes it means battle ground at this point. Maybe if we got a new sign for battleground?

Doesn't valve use the "control point" signs to refer to battlegrounds? The only exception I can see is in maps like 2fort where the battle mostly takes place on the bridge, but they usually then identify that using the "intel" arrow signs.

I consider Battlements to be multiple things, but as a general rule, I consider it to be the places that are part of your base, but it's outside of your base. Like the Sniper Balcony thing on 2Fort. Or the upstairs portion and balcony of the last point's building in Fastlane. Or the window'd areas of Steel looking upon E.

I think many players just consider it a sniper area, or in a/d maps, a defensible position.

I consider 'Battlement' to be interchangeable with 'Sniper Deck' as far as TF2 is concerned. While other classes may find the battlements useful (such as for Scouts who want to try and get atop the bridge roof in 2Fort), I see them as being an area where only one class would want to remain for the entirety of the game: Snipers.

Core qualities of battlements:
  • They work as a place to help defend from.
  • They are raised areas.
  • Typically part of a specific "base" building, having a very specific direction attackers come from or a wall to their back.
  • They are easier to access from the defending side than the attacking side, because attackers face a wall at least one story high.

Examples:
  • 2fort, of course.
  • Defenders' base near the second-point on Badlands
  • Area above spawn point buildings in Goldrush stages 1 and 3.
  • Sniper windows in Well
  • Sniper deck on Mach4

Point C in gravelpit doesn't count, since it's surrounded on all sides. It's not "wall-like" enough. Final checkpoint in Badwater doesn't count, because attackers start high-up and aren't being made to ascend.

I don't see why they would assume this.

Battlements have always meant to me and always will mean a sniper ledge, or other raised ledge that is part of your base and faces out.

When i think battlement, i think of an archer's ledge / some sort of raised structure thats someone shoots from. Also the gaps in the top parts of teh castle resemble them too.

This has ALWAYS irritated me when looking at custom maps. People see the word "battle" and assume it means "To battle! Take up your arms!" Battlements should only ever refer to an upper portion of the map, usually with some sort of cover. Kinda like a death balcony :D

Because it contains the part battle. They dont know what battlements mean but they do know what battle means. Thats why. Any gamer that isnt english and havent heard of the word before will think that a battlement is a battle area. So did i.
Battlements have always meant to me and always will mean a sniper ledge, or other raised ledge that is part of your base and faces out.
I guess your native language is english. That makes you understand those words faster.
