I have downloaded prefabs to the appropriate folder, but I do not know how to access them. When in Hammer, I see a "Create Prefab" button to the right of the screen, but I don't see a "Use Prefab" button anywhere. How do I access my prefabs?

you go to the entity button on your left tool bar thing
and then go over to where it says create prefab
then go up to the dropdown that says "entitties"
and change it to prefabs
then hit Insert Original Prefab

lol.. not going to lie i always wondered this myself.

I ended up saving my "prefabs" on a blank map and naming it like "doorway.vmf" when ever i needed it i would load up "doorway.vmf" and copy/paste over.

lol, oye. =)

lol same here...

but I guess if you have all the files in the right directories it's supposed to show up on one of the drop down menus in the prefab window.

Thanks for you help! I have another noob question if you don't mind. I inserted a spawnroom prefab into my map, but it has a skybox surrounding it on all sides. The spawnroom is inside a building, so I need to get rid of this, but whenever I select the skybox, it selects the entire spawnroom as well. How do I select the skybox by itself?

There is a button for that in hammer. It "ungroups". It's somewhere on the toolbar. I believe it's blue??? I don't know, I just know which one to click. Just hover over the buttons and you will see an ungroup button :)

edit: too late :D

I have one more noob question that needs answering. I want to see what things I've done will look like in the game, but I go to "Run Map...", rather than starting the map inside the game, it just brings me to the menu with where you find sever, create server, ect. When I try to create a server and run the map, it just goes back to the menu. I can't seem to get it to run my custom maps. How do I get my map to work in the game?

Hrm... look at your options in Hammer and make sure that you've directed it to deposit your maps in the correct folder (steam/steamapps/username/tf2/tf/maps or whatever). It should be correct but if it's not that might solve your problem. If not, bring up the console at the tf2 menu (using the ~ on your keyboard, it must be enabled under options-> keyboard -> advanced) and look at what it says after you attempt to load a map. If you can't make sense of that post whatever it says for us to decipher ;)

I figured it out! The problem was when I saved I put spaces in the file name. You absolutely must put underscores instead of spaces to get your map to work.

For the longest time I thought the only way to place prefabs was to use the brush tool. I went through and measured my prefabs and entered their dimensions as part of their filename.

Then I found out you could use the entity tool. Boy was my face red.:cursing:

Another possible solution would to be place the prefab then on the toolbar atop hammer select the IG (Ignore Group) button. Select the prefab, hold down control, and select the parts you do not need. You will still have them grouped which could be useful. Now just delete the skybox walls if not needed.

You can also use the IG button to select individual parts in this new group if you want to edit them individually.

^ For that I just set it to select solids and pick the stuff I don't want, then delete.
